Personally here is what I have on my system currently to keep it running good
Anti-Virus : Norton Anti-Virus
Spyware/Adware : Lavasoft's Adware software
Registry Cleaner: StompSoft's Registry Repair
File Shredder : StompSoft's Digital File Shredder Pro
Needless, to say my laptop is over 4 yrs old and still running great.

this link is for a free antispyware and antivirus
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
you should run a disk defrag once a month
set your antivirus/spyware to do a system scan everyday at a time you wont be on the pc like late at night.
registry cleaners i would stay away from the free ones they usually cause more problems then they fix.
set up your automatic updates in control panel or make sure you go here at least once a week(its mcuh easier to have this automated) http://www.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
good luck
