I am moving to Houston for the police academy and know what police academy is generally like, but does anybody know with some specificity what the police academy is like?

First of all. There is lots of classroom work. Consisting of learning different types of law ie. Traffic, Domestic, General law that applies to the public. Firearms training. how and when to use your firearm. This is done on the firing range as well as in the classroom. The classroom consist of a film called shoot don't shoot. You will be give a firearm (simulated) and told to shoot at only the bad guys. Believe me this is not an easy thing to do. How to care for your firearm etc. The Firing range is with live rounds, but very structured. Fun but serious. Paton training. (nightstick) and of course there's the hand to hand training.
Then you must be able to drive. So you get to practice "pull overs" until you can do it with precision. I hope this is helpful. Its been awhile since I attended..

Not sure about what it's like in Houston, but for me it was a lot of classroom time, some PT, time in the gym for defensive tactics, and some time on the range for firearms and driving.

The one I went to was in a college setting. We had to wear uniforms and be inspected, etc. It seemed to be a bit funny since I had just gotten out of the Army and to hear the complaints from those who were never in.

The class time was sometimes a bit dry. Especially during the legal and Constitutional issues. Not a real exciting topic. The majority of time is spent in class though.

Here in Florida we had to tie up an aligator. That was interesting.

What you'll remember the most are the friends you make. I was in a big academy class and I am still friends with many of the people I met. Now that I am into my 17th year I still on occasion reflect back to those days. It was fun to kid around with everyone.

It depends on what kind of Academy it is. If it is a live-in, military style academy, you can expect the same treatment as Army bootcamp. Up early, lots of exercising, lots of yelling, and some bookwork. Most academies are getting away from this kind of environment and are more academic based. They rely more on teaching and academics than yelling and brut force. They are more class room based and encourage a community policing atmosphere.

Donuts. Lots of donuts. And harassing taxpayers who haven't done anything wrong. Then more donuts.
