My sister had a baby three weeks ago. After a difficult initial period, when breast feeding was very sore, she and the baby have now gotten used to it. Persevering with breast feeding, she has lost so much weight over the last two weeks - and the baby has piled on the pounds, so all parties are happy! Good luck.

The best way to lose weight is to wait. Your body has just gone through nine months of internal discomfort, topped off with the pain of childbirth. You need to exert all your energy right now to healing and taking care of your newborn.
How you treat yourself for the next six weeks will determine how you feel for the next sixty years. Eat healthy, and keep taking your prenatal vitamins for a while to replenish what the baby took. Take the baby in the stroller and walk for 15-20 minutes in the evenings. You may lose some weight, but your goal should be to be healthy and strong so your body can recover from the pregnancy.
At your six week check-up talk to your doctor about the safest methods as well as possible restrictions (if you had a complicated pregnancy or delivery, you may need longer to heal). After your doctor approves it, you should be ok starting any exercise and diet program, but having a baby to take care of will burn quite a few calories itself, so still take it easy. Don't spend energy exercising that the baby may require from you later. Good luck, and congratulations on the new baby!!!

My first opinion would be stop worrying about your weight and enjoy the baby but I was exactly the same. I couldn't wait to lose the weight. Get your baby out in the fresh air. Go walking everyday and don't bypass the hills. It's good for you and baby and free! Also, breast feed. It's proven that breast feeding can help lose weight. Just keep active and try and sleep when you can. Being tired can make you very inactive so when baby sleeps, you sleep. You will find the weight will just drop off. I have lost 1 1/2 stones in the last year.

You've just had a baby on Saturday? It's only been 4 days and you're already worried about losing weight?

Catch up on as much sleep as you can. Trust me, you'll need it. The baby may sleep soundly now, but past 2 weeks he/she will be up every 2 hours needing a feed. So get your rest now while you can.

Secondly, breastfeeding takes up a lot of energy. Imagine that all the energy that your baby needs to grow and develop will come from you. They say that a breastfeeding mother needs an extra 500 calories, so if you're careful with what you eat, making sure that you are moderate with the amount of food and ensure that it's mostly good nutritious food, you're well on your way. My wife got back to below her pre-pregnancy weight within 6 months with just breastfeeding and regular walks with the baby.

But for now, relax. There will be plenty of other things to concern you in the next few months than your weight. Stay healthy and as active as you can and you'll be fine.

Speak to your health visitor and mid-wife. They may have a couple of other things to add.

Oh, and congratulations!

Well congratulations to you! But please give yourself a chance! The child is only 4 days old! You need the resources that you've built up over the months to feed your baby over the coming months so you shouldn't even be thinking about weight loss at this stage. Just relax, make sure you eat a healthy balanced diet, and have fun with your baby - the weight will fall off you before you even know it!

To lose weight, a person has to reduce the calorie intake by some amount by modifying their diet. A diet without sufficient nutrients will only increase the appetite of the person trying to lose weight. Since most people combine a diet with an exercise plan, additional nutrients are required for the growth of muscles required to increase the metabolic rate required for long term weight loss. Breast feed your baby that will help, but don't start dieting just yet, your body needs time to recover from the rigors of pregnancy and childbirth. You will naturally lose weight now you've had the baby, just eat sensibly and you will be fine. Congratulations on your baby. Good luck.

Congratulations on your new baby. From what I've heard from a lot of mothers breast feeding is the quickest and most effective way to lose weight. Apparently you lose 500 calories a day from it!! Eat a healthy balanced diet with lots of fish, wholegrains, calcium and fibre while breast feeding and you could lose your baby weight pretty quickly.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!
don't worry too much,if you are breast feeding keep it up but make sure you keep up your fluids too.try to eat healthily, little and often keeps up your energy levels and keeps hunger pangs away.walking is good for lots of reasons-it gets you out of the house into 'fresh' air-it's good exercise-you may meet other new mums and old friends.check out your local leisure centre or health clinic as they often advertise post natal exercise classes.swimming is excellent as it tones everything and can be invigorating if you are feeling down.it also gives you a break from the baby.
don't forget babies can be very demanding and they grow very quickly, your little one will have you whizzing around like there's no tomorrow, rest when you can, don't get hung up on the house work-as long as you and baby are happy and healthy that's more important than looking like a cat walk model.(I've done this 3 times and made myself ill the first time trying to get back to pre-baby size)
