MOST bone grafting these days is done using sterilized bone or artificial bone. This comes in a small vial from a manufacturer or supplier.

I just wanted to put this info out there so you would not assume that you would be receiving an autograft from the back of your skull or the iliac crest of your pelvis. MAYBE you will, but your surgeon would have certainly discussed this with you first. It requires a hospital admission, so it's not the kind of thing they can spring on you at the time of your visit.

The surgeon will know where is best to first get the graft.....Typically its a small portion of the back part of your skull in which he will shave however much he needs and then carefully carve the shape he needs out of the graft and implant that in your jaw area........and no.....the first few hours of recovery you may feel like you got beat up but after that you'll adjust and it won't be long before you won't feel any pain there. Plus if it does get bad they will have meds for you whether it be pills or some topical treatment.....You'll be okay!

When they remove your tooth, there is a hole that is left. Then they put a material in the hole, don't know where they get the material from, usually the hip i've heard. Then that material fuses with the bone and provides a bigger more stable area for him to put an implant in.

Oh, my hubby had that done and it's not so awful....your mouth heals really quickly, probably the fastest healing part of your body. So don't worry so much. I had some build-up done once that was quite similar where i lost bone from an old car accident. It healed so quickly I was really surprised. Good luck and don't worry!

Bit sore, but heals quick. They will use either bone from elsewhere in the jaw or elsewhere.

Once its 'bonded' to your existsing bits they replug teeth into it.
