Ontario Canada became a smoke-free province in May of 2006. The laws here is that you cannot smoke in any public building which includes bars, bingo halls, casinos and anywhere else you can think of. The gov't states that anti-smoking legislation is the most aggressive in North America. I can't say I am very happy with the legislation but I am glad that it did happen as I did quit smoking myself when the law was to come into effect.
To answer your questions
Are they too cowardly? Yes, I think they are assuming that you are asking about gov't bodies. But they will not do that for one simple reason - Taxes!
Are they lazy? They are not being lazy because they have to write the legislation to have non-smoking bylaws to go in effect and then enforce them. Plus, it does go back to the sale of tobacco products the gov't will lose money if they did.
Smokers rights: I am mixed on this one: Does someone else have the right to pollute another's enviroment? I don't think so. Remember these laws that are enacted are not to make things uncomfortable for the people who are patrons of these places but really for the protection of employees.
Did anyone really object to when they made office buildings smoke-free? Nope because patrons are typically not found in these locations. It was just accepted that you could not smoke in a office setting for the most part. Gov't buildings? No big uproar...the list does goes on.

In several country's in Europe led by Ireland smoking is banned and illegal in the work place, this legislation was put in place to protect workers from the effects of passive smoking on their health. At first people opposed this legislation but now nearly two years on even the most ardent smoker agrees with it, as they are now enjoying the cleaner indoor atmosphere and do not object to stepping outside for a smoke. Did it never occur to you that it is the non smoker who's right to a clean healthy working environment who's rights are being denied ( this legislation covers all places of employment including bars, restaurants, night clubs , etc. Nobody objects to people smoking only to having to suffer passive smoke ,so get ur facts right. P.S. American terrorists rights are also protected or George Bush Senior and Junior would be in Guantanamo bay now.

As a smoker I used to get upset about the skyrocketing number of places that no longer allow you to smoke. These days, where I can smoke is less and less import to me. There are far more important issues out there for us to worry about. I do agree with Leogirl08, the smell is terrible even to me so I don’t blame non-smokers for not wanting to put up with it while they eat their dinners.

Smokers can smoke, they can't smoke where there are large populations on NON smokers. I can tell you as an ex-smoker I was very surprised at how vile the smell really is. I can't be around a lot of smokers because my chest hurts. So you habit is affecting me. I do not wish to make tobacco illegal, smokers are free to kill themselves if they choose, just don't take me with you.

I think there is some gray area there.
As a smoker myself, I dislike being told where and when i can smoke etc...
On the flip side, i believe everyone has the right to be in a smoke free environment.
I think smoking should be outside around areas such as airports, public buildings etc...
However, privately owned businesses should be able to set their own policy. If you don't want to go to a restaurant that allows smoking...DONT EAT THERE.
Just don't take the choice away for others.

In NY it's legal to buy cigarettes at any age but illegal to sell them to anyone under 18. Doesn't make sense. They hire 17 year-olds to be "Brown Shirts" to go shopping for cigarettes. The business gets in trouble, not the buyers.
Well anyway- the billions of Chinese love our cigarettes.

Most smokers (yes - you!) smell really bad. Their breath, clothes, hair, car, house, and work areas STINK! Yet, they are totally unaware of it because they are so used to the smell.
Would you want to be around someone who farts constantly right in your face? Then why do you think we want your smoke in our face?
Additionally, smoking (and second-hand smoke) causes LUNG CANCER - something the rest of us don't want to get. And when you get it you will expect the rest of society to help pay your medical bills.
Also - there is no such thing as "Smoker's Rights". You are not some type of protected class.
In summary smoking is expensive, addictive, unhealthy, and stinky - so don't expect everyone to rally around and protect your right to do it.

None of the above. We just figure that inconsiderate smokers will kill themselves off and then we won't have to put up with the HIGH medical bills, etc. anymore. You've got the right to smoke. I HAVE the right to breath clean air. My right trumps yours, it doesn't eliminate it. You just have to find some place private to smoke, like when you are masturbating.
