is there software that can make people in pictures thinner?
Has anyone seen directions on the net how to do this?

There's a few things you can do with poses, camera angles, and lighting to make people seem thinner when you photograph them, and then there's a few retouching tricks you can do with pictures you've already taken.
For more information on both, I suggest you look into the discussion forums at dpreview. If you register (for free) you can even post your picture in the retouching forum and see who's willing to give it a try for you - and explain what they did of course, so you can do it yourself next time.

You can do all kinds of playing around with Photoshop and similar programs, but this is WAY beyond the scope of what we can talk about here. It is an art.

Terms to look for are "distort," "clone," and "healing brush," for starters.
