Hi there
Your right there has been an abundance of daddy long legs this year! We have had quite good weather this summer which allowed the daddy long legs to develop. Couple that with the rains we had about a month ago. This allowed the larvae to escape with the softening of the ground and hey presto LOADS of Daddy long leg adults. Usually if the rains do not come the daddy long legs die underground and only a few emerge.

the warm and damp climate is the reason for all the daddy long legs, but they only have a life span of 4-5 days, thats if the spiders dont eat them first. so big fat spiders are also everywhere at the moment.

They're on the west coast of North America here too...the climate is similar to England's. It's been very warm and damp here...and they started up a month ago.
I counted at least 50 large webs right outside the back entrance way to my house. It's very creepy. I feel they are taking over!!!
Mind you, they aren't daddy long legs...they are more ferocious looking.

I know!!!!
Not only daddy long-legs, but little small brown spiders too - they build really long webs that catch up - i counted at least 7 in my backyard the other nite when i was leaning out the door for a smoke.
I reckon it's the warm (for london) weather. In australia the spiders come out when its a warm nite (and especially on a full moon - oohhh, freaky!)

Its because there has been a shortage of wasps for the past two years which are the daddy long leg's number one enemy, therefore there are more around becuase the wasps havent killed them

I was just told it's to do with the lack of wasps this year. Apparently the wasps eat the daddy long legs larvae.

I figured it was because it is starting to get colder at night and they dont have a particulary good winter wardrobe of clothes, so are attempting to book a seat inside for the winter ....
By the way, I have a new record of 15 vanquished in one evening, not bad going I thought.

They keep coming from somewhere but my mum told me that they only live for tree days, which is good news!
