I wouldn't be too worried about life-span of the plasma tv. 1st and 2nd generation plasmas had life-span issues, but just about any decent plasma you would purchase today has taken care of this issue. Current plasmas provide 60,000 hours... that is over 25 years even if you had the TV on for over 6 hours every single day!) Also, plasmas have corrected most of the "burn-in" concerns.
Summary... if you are debating to get a plasma, don't let longevity or burn-in be a concern. However, you might want to look at the possible cost of repair (i.e. - you don't repair a plasma... you just get a new one if it breaks), or if the resolution is only 720p (i.e. - HD is moving to 1080p resolution, and will become the government standard by 2009).

Suggest you consider LCD instead. Plasma has a relatively short life expectancy and once it goes it's not repairable. LCD is overall a better value (at least in the long run). LG and Samsung both make great sets that are less pricey than some of the big name brands. You can get some really good feedback and honest opinions on specific brands and models at epinions.com

Consumer Reports advises people that worry about longevity of picture to NOT buy plasma TVs. They recommend DLP TVs instead. Sony is the preferred brand.
