I think if you are dining in a restaurant with someone, they should turn their cellphone off and give you their full attention. They also shouldn't go to the bathroom during the meal just to talk on their cellphone. What do you think?

Yes it is!! There is nothing that can't wait for an hour! NOTHING!! If your house is on fire it will still be on fire when you take the call!

It depends on the profession or line of work of that person. Some professions call for 24-hour attention such as doctors, policemen, priests, head of government agencies, etc. Their turning off of their cellphones could mean loss of lives and/or properties for some people.

However, if the profession may forego the use of cellphone when one is having dinner with other people, it's far better to turn off the cellphone so that there will be no interruptions during that dinner of whatever purpose. If the person is really waiting for an important message or call, the cellphone should just be put in silent mode and once the call or message is received, he should excuse himself from his date or dates that time.

No it isn't rude for them to answer their phone repeatedly in a restaurant. It is rude for it to be on period, while in a restaurant. Not only should they be paying attention to you but they should be considerate to the others eating as well. I myself find it very annoying especially when the people feel like they have to yell into the phone. If someone is on call, they should use a pager that way they can turn it onto vibrate.

That's totally rude. And it doesn't just bother the person at their table. It bothers the whole restaurant when someone's cell rings all evening. If someone eating with me did this I'd say something. Probably something like "Would you rather have dinner some other time, you seem pretty busy". Hopefully they would the hint.

When people leave their cell phones on during a meal it's just plain rude. Unless there is a call you're expecting which will affect your life, or you are on call as a doctor or something, the world can wait for you for an hour. There is nothing that important. At least put it on silent mode. You are telling the person you are with that they are not important enough to give your full attention to.

If I had a friend who did this to me, I think I would cut the dinner short and politely tell them it's clear they have other things on their adgenda and are too busy at that moment to enjoy a meal with me and to please reschedule when they are not expecting all those important calls.

Cell phones aren't the problem, it's the USER, my husband has a BlueTooth and I HATE it!!! I have a cell phone and I use it very discreetly and it's always turned off, I know what the definition of urgent is!!! When you're out for dinner with someone, you deserve their undivided attention PERIOD!!! More people should walk out on these rude people and maybe they'll get it!!!

Yea it is rude for someone to answer their cellphone while having dinner with them, its also rude and annoying to have a cellphone conversation out in public so loud that everyone in the store can hear what you are saying.

I agree with you. The only exception would be if the person was "on call" for work during this evening or if the person has children who are either on their own or with a babysitter. Even in those cases, the person does not need to answer every call; only the ones from work or the children.

I was taking a class once and a lady had left her children with a babysitter as her husband was not at home. She asked before class if she could leave her cell phone on. She told us and the instructor the reason. Everyone said of course leave it on. The phone did not ring. Even if it had, no one would have been annoyed as she warned us before and gave us her reason.

Yes, it is mind-bogglingly rude to answer cell phone calls while in a restaurant...and in a movie theatre, meeting, during exams or classes. I like what one person wrote, which is that there is nothing that can't wait an hour!

Yes, it is rude when people use their cell in public places. They should leave their 'personal' business at home or in the office. Who wants to hear about your love life or work life.

Give us a break PLEASE! You're KILLING the romance or enjoyment of somebody's fine dining or good movie. Can you imagine if someone was making a proposal to his girl and RING there goes the phone to DESTROY that MOMENT!
