I understand because I struggled with this question earlier on in my Christian walk, so I did a study on prayer. I found that there are different types of prayer, and the one that is befitting for your question is intercessory prayer.

God is THE Judge, judging for righteousness and against sin. We continue to sin (sinneth), and He continues to be merciful, but we ANGER God and at times His wrath is kindled against us. SO, when/if I see this is happening (sickness, famine, destruction, natural disaster and/or other suffering) with one of my sisters or brothers (or a community--even my own), I can go before the Father and INTERCEDE. I can REQUEST that the Lord extend His mercy (based on His standing with me). Even better, I can ask other saints to pray and intercede WITH me in a corporate annointing, which God LOVES (unity in the body). Doesn't mean He WILL honor the request, but sometimes He does and we have been given the liberty to ask. So, if we love one another, why wouldn't we pray and intercede for the afflicted?

Jeremiah 27:18
But if they be prophets, and if the word of the LORD be with them, let them now make INTERCESSION to the LORD of hosts, that the vessels which are left in the house of the LORD, and in the house of the king of Judah, and at Jerusalem, go not to Babylon.

1 Timothy 2:1
I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, INTERCESSIONS, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;

God's will be done on earth as it is in heaven, which is the overall BIG picture. When it comes to individual persons (or groups of people) and what they may reap and sow...God may hear from other of His compassionate children who come forward on their behalf.

2 Chronicles 7
14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, AND PRAY, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

Peace and blessings to you!

They were living their life the only way they knew how. When Jesus died He instructed His disciples to preach to the world. Yes people lived on the earth while the dinosaurs roamed the earth, they are mentioned in the Bible as Mammoth creatures. I prayed that my granddaughter's life be spared if it was God's will, she was a newborn, today she is 12 years old. When my dad had an aneurysm I prayed that his life be spared also, and he lived.
I use to think when I was younger around 13/14 that if I mentioned everyone I loved in my prayers that God would not let them die, then my great-grandfather (whom I dearly loved) died. I was shaken in my faith at first, but I also grew stronger and I realized that we ALL have to die, it is a given fact.
The reason I pray is to talk to the Father and lay before Him my thanks, needs, and concerns. He gives me daily guidance, love, and understanding of things that happen.
Now that I am older and stronger in my faith I pray for God's will to be done, and NOT my will. Although my will may differ from God's I know that He knows what is best for me.
You never can tell, sometimes God lets them live, but it is His will we seek, and not our own.

At that time, around the world, people worshipped what they believed was their god, or gods. Man was created for worship, and they worshipped as they knew to do.
When Jesus arose and spoke to the disciples, his last final command to them was to go throughout the entire world and spread the Good News.
That was God's plan -- that the entire world would be lead to Christ and have one-on-one relationship with Him and eternal life.
Jesus said "it is better that man knows not the things of God, than a man who has heard the Good News, but turned away."

We don't have all the answers, but God is a just God. I believe that those who never heard of God and Jesus Christ, God will be fair and just with them.

The Jews who lived before Christ are saved by believing in the promise of a coming Messiah.

But, if you have heard the Gospel, and turn away, you will suffer eternity separated from Him, for God is Holy, and cannot have unholiness dwell with Him in His Heavenly realm.

We Christians are working diligently to spread the Gospel to the four corners of the earth. That is a command. When everyone in the world has been exposed to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, He will come again.

Prayer isn't about getting what we want, it's about being in communication with God. Yes, God tells us to come to Him with our requests and needs, but more importantly, prayer is to seek the will of God and align ourselves with it.

I'm not saying that people dying are necessarily His will...but in this world where there is sickness, disease and death, dying happens, even when we pray.

My feeling and experience of God is that He is perfect in all His ways, including the ones I don't understand. I have had prayers answered and I have prayed and seen nothing happen. In all these results, I trust God's judgment over mine. His ways are higher than my ways. If He is silent on a matter, or if He chooses to have a circumstance go another way, I bow to it. He is soverign over everything, including every aspect of my life and anything I ask.

The problem here is that the first best things cannot be described they are transcendent of human thought.
The second best things are often misunderstood because they are attempts by humans with our limited capacity to describe the indescribable. they are misunderstood because people read them as history and lose the deeper meaning
The third best are things like the weather and economics and politics these are the things we talk about.
All these questions are the result of misunderstanding a metaphor for the human soul. and interpreting them as history,
Your placing God in your BOX and trying to understand God and you cant understand because the symbols that were used and understood are no longer understood. They are no longer images that are common in our language. They were understood then. They were meant to help us on our inner journey not the outer one.
Don't look for history don't look for things that don't apply to your journey look for the metaphor that will deepen you inner journey and help you to see the here and now as heaven.

I will answer the part of your question about prayer because the rest of it is God's to judge just like people that lived before the cross.. Prater is NOT a gimme time. It's time for a christian to conform his will to the greater will of God.. If you can't understand that it might not be able to get thur to your worldly mind after all things of the Spirit are spiritually discerned... Jim

There is no one answer to all of your questions. However, as to the one about praying: I believe that prayer is to have a "relationship" with God (if that is what you choose). God already knows what you need and want, so you do not need prayer to tell him that.

We pray because God tells us to pray. We pray because God demonstrates in the Bible that sometimes circumstances are changed by prayer. God doesn't explain how or why He responds to our prayers, but He tells us that He does. The Bible teaches that our sin can interfere with our prayers. It also teaches that sometimes God, in His perfect wisdom and love, does not give us what we request. He demonstrates His love and care for us, not by always doing what we ask, but by drawing us to Himself, by dying for us so that we can have a relationship with Him.

Thier body may die but they may have excepted Christ so they well live forever in heaven, do not think this(earhtly realm) is it when you "shed this mortal coil" there is a life after this, either death in hell or life in heaven. That is why we should pray, so that we may talk to God and He to us.

You're right, praying to god to intervene is asking him to change his mind.
