okay, I am not entirely sure how to phrase this, but I will try. Did God just stop inspiring people to write about Christianity and godly things by the time the council decided what went in and what stayed out? If not, then how come we don't try to add some more writings that could be considered inspired? That sounds kind of dumb, but the original council had criteria which a piece of writing must meet in order to make it into the canon. So why not use some of the same criteria for some more modern writings that might be more applicable to modern times? I hope that makes sense.

okay, you all have some really good points. Here are some issues I think would be nice if the Bible talked *directly* about instead of making us guess (a couple of these, I have had people give me Biblical principles for both sides of the issue):
1. Death penalty
2. Women preachers
3. Moms and careers
4. Sports
5. Hunting for fun
6. When to tell the doctor to "pull the plug"
7. What to do with aging parents in a modern society
8. Singleness
9. modern day issues concerning the middle East.

To name a few. I know you can use Biblical principles to back your view on these issues, but so can the other side. So it would be nice if modern day cultural issues were directly addressed. But good points about deciding "who" would be on the council, etc.

Very good question. I have often thought this an interesting subject.
I don't think "wise" people can write scriputure. In order to write holy writ, the word of God, you must be given Revelation directly from God. The many different Christian religions of today atest to the fact that, no matter how good someones intentions are, people see things differenty. This isn't always a problem, but how do you know if what someone says is what God wants to be said. Who decides, another council?
In my mind, God should call a prophet again. One that He speaks with and gives his will to. This can only be done on God's timetable, not mans. We will know the prophet the same way we knew them from ancient times, "Ye shall know them by their fruits." I also think that the Holy Ghost will confirm the truthfulness of any prophet of God.
Just my thought...

Maybe that could happen. Some very good books have been written about the Bible, it just doesn't go into the Bible. One usually does not altar an original book other than changing terminology into more understandable modern words. Check our some bibles that you feel fit your needs. There are many out there. Good luck on your quest. The Message has been described as a bible applicable to modern times. Some prefer the King James, others the New International Version. Pick the one that fits you best. I don't believe they could add more writings because none of us live in the century that the bible was written. I hope this helps answer your question. It also states you are not to add or remove anything from the Bible.

I think your question makes perfect sense.

First of all, I agree. I believe in an open canon, which means I believe God inspires people to write for him from time to time still even today. I just think it's rare. (Very rare.) I also think that a book considered for part of the canon should be put to a very very very very very very strict standard: this is, after all, simply something that we will claim God wrote through a human agent. Examples of things I think God inspired after the closing of the canon are: the decrees of the 7 ecumenical councils, Augustine's "City of God," "Confessions," and "On the Holy Trinity."

But, going back to your question, one of the criteria that the original New Testament Canon had was that the books had to have been written either by an apostle or a follower of the apostles. All the books that meet that requirement (except First and Second Clement, and some will argue if they meet that requirement) and still exist are found in the New Testament.

It does make sense. But what kind of modern things are you talking about??? Everything that we need today is talked about in the Bible. Marriage, child rearing, divorce, blended families (yes it even talks about that. Jesus was Joseph's step child) etc.

Besides, if you start adding more modern things to the Bible then you are changing God's Word and then you just end up with another false version of The Word, which God clearly is adamant against.

If you think there is something missing or needed what would it be? So far every serious student of the Bible has found what they need is some form. Using the principles and lessons for life now. And answering the many questions about why we are here on this planet. And what the future of the planet will be.

Hi! God didn't stop to inspire man, but He is inspiring us only in the Word that was wrote because He said in Apoc. 22:18,19 that you can't add or take from the Book. He give the entire Reveletion then, but was things that was pertening to the future and was need of man's in certans time to be inspired to bring thouse Scriptures. Like in the Old Testament, Noe bring: "He will rain!", was his inspiration from God and stood with it, but Moses couldn't bring it. It wasn't for that day. So is today, Bible isn't yet fulfiled yet, but are a few parts that are caming togheter now. Hope this is satisfaing for you. Sorry for my english

The 66th book of the Bible was written circa 90-95 A.D. This is the inspired word of God. Every so called prophet who has written since that date is a false prophet and blasphemer.

People can believe in what they want, but I believe in Jesus Christ the Son of God and I believe the Bible.

If you choose to believe differently, that is your choice.

Grace and Peace

Scripture is God-breathed and written by Divine inspiration by men. God often chooses mankind to do His will, just as He uses angels to be His messengers.

At the right time, God sent His only Son to live a sinless life and die a sin-bearing death for you and me. Jesus Christ is the Word, living in flesh.

Today, Jesus sends the Holy Spirit to indwell the believer...to minister to mankind...to intercede with God.

God is at work all around us...many keep their eyes shut...but to those of faith, we join in. So inspiration is ongoing all the time in the lives of the faithful, who are lights to a dark world. By their lives and words they share the Gospel to others: the Word continues to live in the world.

We cant add any more because there are false prophets around, u can see a f. prophet as someone who is real, if he adds anything stupid, we might as well believe him. And cant remove because evry word there has a purpose for every single thing!
Its the word of God not word of Man. God chooses what he wants in it and inspires men to write it.

The Holy Spirit had men write what God wanted in the bible. If other people want to write, go ahead just don't try to include it in the bible.
