Human nature. They'd rather cater to their selfish nature than overcome it. I probably would too, except I believe God to be real and His requirements are a quite crucial thing to learn.

Very good question. They want a convenient religion, something that they can just accept and expected to be saved. They don't want to go through all the hassles of praying five times a day, fast one full month every year, give percentage of their wealth to poor.

Also they want a religion that allows them to drink alcohol, commit adultery, and not cover their bodies (for women).

They don't want to wake up early morning (usually 5am to 6am) every day just to pray to God and thank Him, ask for forgiveness and for guidance.

They want a religion where someone other than you has suffered for your sins, whereas you are saved if you just accept him.

They are in a state of dream, and the death will wake them up. And the regret that they feel that time, will be greater than everything in this world. Quran explains their regret as "they will bite their two hands and crunch their bones and flesh, yet they won't feel the pain, because the pain of regret is more painful than the physical pain they experience".

Well that is the original disease...

Forgetting the position of God we want to become the proprietor or God ourselves. And that instant we are entangled in the reactions of our work and fall down.

Even service of God they want to do as it suits then. This is called as "Half Hen Judgment" in Vedic Literatures. Hen's Back part is very good as it gives Egg but Hen's front part is very costly as it eats. So the foolish want to cut of the front part and keep the back part. Similarly Some religionist try to accept only that part of scripture that suits their taste, and leave the rest or even change it ..

But that way does not work...

yeah, you're right about that. I see that too.
well, maybe because what they really want is not to serve God but uses Him only for his personal gain. So, whether he sees what is most logical and reasonable religion but insists on his own mistaken belief is because his social group will change, business might be affected, and other negative things will happen to him.
He could also be limited only in that understanding. afraid to venture into the unknown or unfamiliar, especially those having to do with gaining material things or getting favors.

Because people want a feel good fuzzy religion. If you say something they dont like they make another religion that says its ok to do that. They dont realize that just cause they make a new religion up doesnt change the fact that God thinks its wrong.

Who is to say what the Divine really wants? Are we to believe one book over another? Or the word of one person over another? Unless the Divine starts to directly speak to everyone then it is up to the individual to decided what they feel is the right path to take. Of course if the Divine did start speaking to everyone then it wouldn't be faith it would be fact, and therein lies the difference between the two. Each person must decided for themselves what path is the right one for them.

As Carl Marx said " religion was an opium", not people but religious heads spoil the minds, for their selfish motives.
