First of all it is not illegal to take a puppy before six weeks, some pups wean in four weeks. The more pups a dogs has the quicker they get them weaned. I have bred and raised dogs most of my life. The reason your puppy bites like that is for two reasons - 1. He is teething and 2. That is how pups play with each other. What you want to do is buy some small chew bones and then when the pup bites on you take your thumb and place it in its mouth and squeeze it bottom jaw just enough it flinches and tell it no biting and then give it a chew bone. Pups tend to learn quicker than adult dogs and it won't take long for it realize that a chew bone is for chewing on not you. This had worked for many years with my dogs and for many of the people that I have given dogs to.Another thing I have gotten for them to chew on also is an all rubber baby pacifier. I had one pup that loved it so much because it reminded him of his mom's tit that he ran around with it in his mouth all the time. And to play with your pup you can also take old socks and tie a knot in them and play tug o' war, puppies love it.To fish lips- if you put a little vinegar in dogs water they will like it and also vinegar in their water will help keep them from getting fleas - just don't make it too strong, only a small amt.

How did you come across a one month old puppy anyway? They bite to play as if you were one of it's parents. The parent would bite/play back until it's had enough, then it would growl and perhaps bite a little harder to let the pup know play time is over. It's a communicative response amoungst the species... a little tap on the nose and a "no bites" in a stern voice should do the trick. Repeat with a little harder tap and louder voice if it continues BUT... at that young of an age, you probably should let it nibble until its a few more weeks older and can understand.

I am no puppy expert, but all the puppy's Ive had to train so that they can be adopted out to good loving family cant bite! Otherwise they wont find a family. So What Do is keep it simple! Say "No" or "No Bite" If you are siting on the floor cross your arms across your chest to that puppy cant bite your hands. Award the puppy by praising it all the time when its not biting you.Say good girl or boy! When the playing gets rough, you should say "No" and stop playing. That sends the signal to the puppy that something was wrong. Think about it! If someone stoped playing with me every time I started to bite. That fun would end! That's no fun! I would stop biting! Hope this works out for ya! Fergie

First of all I would have to ask why do you have a one month old puppy? It is illegal to take a dog under 6 weeks old from its mother. Even more important, puppies this young learn proper behavior from their mother and littermates, which is why it's crucital to raise them with the mom and littermates. Normally at this age the puppies will be playing and biting on each other. When they get too rough it is the mom and littermates that let them know their play is too rough, and not to bite so hard. It is not a good idea to hold a puppy's nose to prevent them from biting. First of all a 4 week old puppy I image is too small for this. Also they will just think you are playing and keep doing it. Your puppy is teething. You should get him/her some puppy toys meant for teething puppies, like kongs or nylabones. A small nylabone would be best. So, when the puppy bites you, you should 1st jump back and say "ouch" really loud, turning your back to the pup and act like you are hurt (be overly dramatic). This will replicate the signals the puppy would normally get from its mom and littermates. After you do that replace your hand with something the dog CAN teeth on - the nylabone, kong, or frozen piece of cloth. After some time he will get the point. As he gets bigger and if he still doesn't understand, try spraying some Bittle Apple on your hands. Most dogs don't like the taste of it and they won't put their mouths on anything with BittleApple on it. Some dogs though, like mine, could care less.

Well you have to let your pup know that you are in charge and you are the dominate dog. So next time he does this lightly pinch or tap the back of his neck and say NO in a firm voice.
Wolves in the wild show who is dominate by biting the lesser members of the pack on the neck or face. It doesn't hurt them but it shows them who is in charge. You have to become the alpha dog in your pup's eyes (which shouldn't be too hard because you are so much bigger than the pup) so that you will be able to communicate with each other. Dogs can learn commands... but to really get through to your dog you have to communicate like a wolf.

I agree with puppyzluv77. I did the same with our pups. when they bite us while playing, we would say "ouch" very loudly and start rubbing the place where the bite happened. This gives them a message that they have done something that hurt us. We have to be very dramatic about this whole thing and it really works. The next time the intensity of the bite will become lesser.
all the best and love to your pup!!

Puppies bite, it's what they do. When he bites down put your thumb in his mouth and gently but firmly (don't hurt him) press on his tongue, this will release his bite and deter him from biting. Also try replacing your hand with a chew toy so that he learns not to bite skin, a big dog that bites is not as gentle as a puppy that bites.

what worked with my parents' dog was that when they were playing with the puppy they would make sure she always bit her own lip when trying to bite them. It didn't stop the biting but helped her to learn the "play bite" , you know the gentle bite that they normally use when playing.
Also a spray bottle (get a new one to avoid any old chemicals that might have been in it) with water works. Just spray the pup when it bites. if just water doesn't work, put a small amount of vinegar in it. the puppy will hate that.

Its normal for puppies to be mouthy, its their way of playing. You just have to make them understand its not fun for us. When the puppy does lightly grasp his mouth and tell him "no" in a stern voice and then give him a chew toy. It helps him understand how you want him to play. You can also buy sprays at the pet stores that leaves an unpleasant taste in their mouth. So they loose their desire to chew your hands or whatever it is sprayed on. It does not hurt your puppy, you or other items. I used Bitter Apple to stop my puppy from chewing me and my stuff. Nature's Miracles also makes a similar product that works just as well. They are training aides to assist you in breaking your puppy from chewing.
