The baby is fully developed and basically just grows and gains weight during this time. The lungs are usually already fully developed. Baby is getting ready for life outside of the womb- sucking, peeing, etc. Usually already in a head down position by this time. Mom's body is getting ready- the ligaments in the lower abdominal area/pelvis are loosening and preparing for the birth- this is why a lot of women experience tenderness in this area and walking for very far is usually uncomfortable. Breasts are making colostrum for baby (full of the most important stuff, very rich and full of nutrients and antibodies)

In most cases the mother doesn't love her new born. This happens as they get to know each other.
