I'm visiting in November. I want a nice but not too touristy place which is convenient to get into midtown from.

I stayed at the New Yorker, a bit pricey, but very nice. Very clean, Staff is great. Close to Madison Square Garden. It was easy to get around from there.

I stayed at Hotel Metro in January. I can recommend it very highly. Ask for one of the top floors. You're one block north of the Empire State Building and can look straight up at it from the roof of the hotel. No fancy amenities but the room was spotless, quiet (I was on the ninth floor), convenient to midtown, and relatively inexpensive for Manhattan.

If you've never been to New York expect smaller than average rooms and dirty side streets (hey, they're old and there's a lot of people making a lot of trash. Trash is picked up almost daily so don't sweat the small stuff.)
