I'm going to install 13x13 tiles in my bath wall surround. Underneath the old tiles was regular drywall, 1/2 inch. I'm going to replacing that the hardibacker with moisture control. Should I stay with the 1/2 thick size? Also, there were some thin strips of what appeared to be thick tape between the two drywalls, near where the stud is. Any idea what this is and if I need to replace it? Thank you.

yes, use the 1/2" backerboard. The tape is probably drywall seam tape. You should use a fiberglass mesh tape over any seams on the backerboard.

Perfect 1/2 Hardibacker. It will support the weight of 13x13 tiles no problem. In the bath make sure u use Laeticette Color Lock epoxy grout!

You need to use the same 1/2" backerboard.Do not use moisture resistant sheetrock!!!!! The special tape is used to seam the joints where the backerboard meet. The tape is in homedepot.Be sure to ask for tape for backerboard.Regular joint tape won't work

You would want to use 1/2" so that it would be flush with the remaining dry wall. The tape was moisture barrier and your grout will replace it. Don't forget to seal the grout with moisture resistant sealant. Don't forget your spacers.
