How are you.
You would be right to think why on earth is he writing to me after all this time, but the truth is, I woke up this morning thinking about you. It made me wonder what has been happening in your life since the last time we meant.............

Or you could look for an amusing greeting card. They sell some for that situation.

Is it to an ex? Keep it quite light and casual but be warm, funny - give some info on your life now, and ask them questions.
I'd keep it fairly brief for the first letter/email though, incase you don't hear back...

really, the best way to pick up after four years
is in person
1) brief contact w/her family/friends to see what's been up w/her in the past 4 yrs.
2) quick 'phone call to her: "hey, ---. it's IshotJR. haven't seen you in awhile. thought about you the other day. how're you doin'?"
Tip: whatever you're planning to say, imagine if someone came up to YOU and said the same thing? how would YOU take it?
