sorrento is beautiful!I was there in july.it's a great place for people watching.for a nice but pricey meal visit l'antica trattoria, all the locals go there.there are some fab bars on the piazza tasso in particular bar syrenuse.try the local wine, sorrento or solaro, gives me the giggles just at the thought of it!!the beaches aren't great but ok.the sea is amazing.go to the drains area,it's all narrow streets and little shops and bars.look up the sorrento info webcam and it'll give you a sneak preview.have a look at the 14th century san Francesco cloisters.i was bridesmaid at a wedding there and it's so beautiful.sorry i can't help with off the beaten track, but i'm sure where ever you go you'll have an amazing time.even if it is just watching the world go by.happy birthday!
buon viaggio!fa attenzione,ciao!

How about Pompeii or Herculano (The buried villages). Between them that's a solid half a day. Not sure that I would recommend Naples though - but you might like it. So it might be worth adding that onto your Pompeii visit.

Otherwise - Sorrento itself is nice to relax in.

It kinda depends how long you're going to be there really. From memory, there aren't too many beaches in the area - or at least right on Sorrento itself.

There're bound to be a couple of walks in the area as well, but it's been a few years I'm afraid.

Check out Companions 2 travel website - there are a group pof people on there off to Sorrento - and one of the ladies loves the place ,has many good things to say about it and advice to give! I won't put her name on here in case she objects but look at the message boards on www.compnaions2travel.co.uk. Can't help you myself but I can assure you there will be some great advice winging your way if you log on to that site! (think you may have to join as a member which is about a fiver but I think it is worthwhile had some good tips from there)

There isn't that much to do in Sorrento. I would recommend that you stay in Capri instead. There's so much to do. In the evening, the place to be is in the square. There's great people watching there. Capri is beautiful.

Pompei? Ischia? Positano? Amalfi? There are loads of great places and excursions.

I went in August, it is absolutely fantastic. Great food and wine - quite reasonable prices too.

You will have a great time, I got married there 3 weeks ago, so I am slightly biased. But it is fantastic!
