I have a boyfriend who says he loves me but he needs a lot of space, a lot. I give him he space he needs and he always comes back to me. Yesterday I couldn't stand it it's been a year of our relationship and I want to get married and share my life so I asked him to marry me. I told him a long engagement would be good. He said yes at first but then started talking about how it is too soon and how he isn't ready. Is he playing mind games with me and just using me as a stepping stone until something better comes along? Would it be smart to leave now before I get even more hurt?

How old are you?
Sounds to me like he is waiting for something better to come along.
I would cut my losses and get on with my life.
Better to hurt now than invest more time and emotion in this guy and he does not know what he wants.

If u'r ready to settle down and he's not, then i think you two do not vibrate on thesame frequency. Maybe he doesn't see a wife in u, coz if he does, he will be scared to loose u and thus try to keep u quite close to him. Even if he is not yet ready financially or otherwise he will say words that will assure u of his intentions to do so in the nearest future.
To be with somebody, u two need to share common dreams and visions. If its lacking then its not really worth the trouble. Break up with this guy if he's not serious. There are many single guys out there ready to settle down.

I think only time will tell you are going to be hurt now anyway if you really care for him .....you never know maybe he wanted to ask you on Christmas everyone needs time and space at least he is letting you know this give him a chance

Sounds to me like you are too full on. Asking him to marry you after a year in my opinion is too soon especially when this guy wants space.
I think you should back off.

It seems like your guy is too comfortable with your relationship. He knows you're crazy about him and would accept all the BS he throws your way.
Maybe it's time you stepped back and re-evaluated your relationship. Ask for a break and see how he reacts.

you do not say how old you are but it sounds like he isnt ready to get married and settle down,, Him taking a break and space sounds like he goes out with other woman during the down time

I would leave.
And when you leave I would cut all ties with him and see if he comes back to you.
If he realizes what he has missed when you are gone then he will come running.
But when you leave you have to be strong and concrete about this.

if you pressure him too much he will leave. give him some time and if you get tired of waiting then leave him and find someone better.
