Every decision is made based upon percieved cost/benefit analysis. The perception may be distorted from reality when it only considers near term events, irrational fears, or the less significant details.

Attention is simply a question of interest and passion. When you find it difficult to maintain focus on a particular thing, the payoff for your efforts is insufficient compared to the required sacrifice in terms of mental and emotional energies. Mental sacrifices oftentimes consist of confusion, mental exhaustion, or the lack of mental work on areas of higher payoff.

Work pays off with a variety of things, including salary, recognition, and meaningful accomplishment/productivity. School pays off with interesting intellectual intrigue with theory. HW may introduce confusion, irrelevance, departure from theory, forced compliance and conformity (to the "correct" answers) via arbitrary grading, etc.

The only solution for solving an attention problem is by introducing payoffs which are directly, consistently, and solely tied to the problem. Forced compliance can be resolved by voluntarily going "the extra mile." Confusion can be resolved by working with others (in your class or here on Yahoo Answers) to share understanding. Conformity to answers via arbitrary grading (based on whatever standard the professor may prefer may be resolved by divorcing yourself emotionally to the results/grades. Accept that the grades have nothing to do with you and may serve as tools for identifying areas where you can and should learn more. Don't let anyone make any conclusions from or even be privy to your grades. Such negative judgements or inquiries are never productive or helpful.

Believe in your abilities to successfully accomplish your homework in an enjoyable way. Look for the most enjoyable aspects of the homework and make it a fun game. Find a balance with your other responsibilities and find peace with reserving time to do your homework in a place where it is not easy to fulfill other responsibilities or do other more enjoyable activities.
