My son is 8 and still using pull-ups. He is also blind and has cerebal palsy. When I mentioned going online and the vast amount of info, his teacher also expressed intrest. She has many children with autism and toilet time is one of the most difficult areas to master. Thanks for any and all answers.

hi i actually work in child care. with autistic children. as well as with children with no disabilities. i work with the 2 year olds. i have learned as long as there are no medical control issues with the child as to why they can not control the urges to go there is no reason as to why they can not learn. consistency is they key. the only way i have taught my younger kids has been through continuously doing every hour on the hour. a lot of children disabled or not learn through repetitive actions. i do not even use a "reward" system. bribery doesn't work for me. praise lots and lots of praise on how proud you are and how well they have done. it makes them feel so good about themselves. as well if they have an actual accident which is to be expected. dint get angry don't get discouraged they can feel that. and they get down and confidence lowers. explain to them you understand accidents happen and will try to make it to the potty next time. you have to be realistic though some children of all natures pick up on it quickly than others. it may take a good to 6 weeks to get this going as a routine alone. much less gaining success. i have one little girl i have worked with almost 4 months. until recently she understood the concept of the potty but just couldn't master the art. finally she is on the right track no accidents for almost 2 weeks. i praise her every day on how proud i am and what a big girl she is. even though she has showed success the encouragement is there to continue on this path. good luck i no how tough it can be. these kids aren't even my own and i as well get frustrated. but it is part of life and parenting. i wish you the best of luck and hope someones suggestion on here or else where will give you the guidance your looking for.
