It can be a stroke - or a TIA (also known as a mini-stroke). Recovery depends on the severity of the stroke, speed of treatment, and avoidance of risk factors. Being under the influence of alcohol makes the diagnosis more difficult.

Instead of writing in to this forum - why aren't you on the phone calling 911? If it is a stroke, delaying treatment will be a major detriment to his prognosis.

Get him some medical help - NOW!

He needs to stop drinking and smoking and see a doctor. If he is lucky, he may recover some of the use of his hand and speech, but it will take rehabilitation from trained professionals. This stroke could be a warning of a more deadly one in his future, perhaps even death, if he doesn't heed and change his ways...NOW!

Your friend needs to stop smoking and get some help for his drinking because if he had a stroke before he's likely to have a stroke again and possibly a heart attack because smokers have a 3 times higher risk for coronary, pulmonary, congestive heart disease and even higher risk for stroke and anyurisms.

That is how my grandfather died. Of course it was after 10 years on not being able to move the right side of his body, crapping in his pants, drooling out half of his mouth, not being able to chew correctly to the point half of his teeth needed pulled, he couldn't walk or remember or make a coherent sentence. He might recover this time but sooner rather than later another, bigger one will come. If it does, pray he doesn't survive.

this happens to people that drink a lot....but if he stays sober and it is still happening he should seek medical attention....and if you all think it could be a stroke he needs medical attention now..he sure needs to care for his health more than the drinking...he could really paralyze his self or a lot of things can go wrong when you have a stroke....
