Four years is quite a large age gap between children - my own are now 17 and 21. You could ask your son to make a book for his little sister. That way, both children are involved and at their own level of understanding. Pictures cut out of magazines and stuck in a scrap book with a word or two underneath were the starting point for my children.

I can't remember any books suitable for those ages, but my favourite for early teens is a series written by Susan Cooper in the mid seventies called "The Dark Is Rising" sequence (5 books).
Basic theme, good v bad.
Brilliant - I read them again this summer, 20 years after the first time!

My daughter is 2, she has tons of books! She doesn't really have any favorites yet, but some that she likes are Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, and Bears on Wheels (a Seuss). I like Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, because when it says "Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, I love you" I always give her a little hug, and she's gotten used to it and will anticipate it at that part of the book. She'll always get a little grin on her face right before I do it. It's just our special little thing!

My favourite books are any Shirley Hughes books with Alfie and Annie Rose. I love the drawings in her books. I have bought most of her books for my daughters. I have to say I love Guess How Much I Love You? Its a beautiful story and I still get a little choked up at the end LOL!

I have two daughters -- 3 years old and almost 2. Their favorites change regularly, but here are some that they really like this week.
"Mike Mulligan and the Steam Shovel" and "Katy and the Big Snow" by Virginia Burton -- stories that teach a good work ethic and have lots of big machinery that kids love (Katy is a crawler tractor with bulldozer and snow plow attachments. Maryann is the steam shovel in the other story.)
anything with Winnie the Pooh in it
"Mrs. Wishy-Washy" by Joy Cowley -- very funny and simple enough for beginning readers to read alone

A particular favorite of my son (who is now 4) is "Three Tales of My Father's Dragon" by Ruth Stiles Gannett. It's a series of three books about a little boy named Elmer who goes on an adventure to rescue a baby dragon being held captive on Wild Island, and their journey to return the dragon to his home in the mountains of Blueland. The boy and the dragon get into all sorts of scrapes, but manage to find all sorts of imaginative (and non-violent, an extra plus) solutions to their troubles.

Any Roald Dahl are brilliant. My Dad used to read me Wind in the Willows which I still look back on with great memories. Enid Blyton is fun and easy. What Katy Did series are old now but still great - they were read tome as well.
