i belive that my grandad was part of the lancashire regement . he signed up of his own doing and was under age . at some point he was missing presummed dead but was eventually found in france with bullets in his knee . i am led to believe that he was a dunkirk veteran and it states that on his grave stone . i have also been told that he saved the life of his commanding officer and was mentioned in dispatches for it. his name is thomas gerard riley and he was born 2nd august 1920 he passed away 3rd febuary 2005 . he joined up in burnley lancashire but i have only ever known him live in scunthorpe i just dont know where to start my search and would be very gratefull of any help and advice .

Try one of the census' for his area. These are available online i believe. I've just been given a copy of our family records back to 1722 and that seems to be a popular start point altho i'm sure there are a lot more people out there with better experience than me!

Click on to Genes United web site. They will give you step by step instructions. You should then be able to find his birth and death certificate
