I ask this in all respect, please don't think otherwise.
I have listened to Jehovas witness's a few times over the years and the one thing that was constant it their messages was that God was going to step in and sort the mess out before the last survivour's of the first world war had died. Well now, because there is only a handful of very old men left who can't have long left on this earth, can we expect God to start his clean up pretty soon?

I'm not a JW, but I can answer your question objectively.

The belief that Jesus would return was one of many false prophesies perpetuated by the JWs, through the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society. Once it became apparent the Second Coming did not happen in 1914, the JWs claimed He did return, we just didn't see Him. This is a direct contradiction of Scripture, which tells us that "every eye" will see Him when He returns to earth.

If you want to know more about this subject, go here:

http://blueletterbible.org/study/cults/exposejw/chap1.html

Scroll down to the section titled, "Has the Society Admitted to and Covered Up False Prophecies?" You can see actual copies of JW publications proving they made a false prophecy and then lied about it.

If you have about an hour, go back to the top and read all of the documents posted there. You'll have a better understanding of what the JWs are about than the JWs themselves.

Thank you, This is a wonderful question to high light that Jehovah's Witnesses don't follow men.

We serve Jehovah God who is eternal.

And yes we are expecting Jehovah to step in soon to cleanse the earth, not because faithful brothers are getting old, but because the prophecy at Matt 24, Luke 21, Mark 13, Rev. 6 are all coming true.

It actually made national news when Jehovah's Witnesses changed this teaching; the question above became obsolete more than a decade ago.

For the vast majority of their modern history, Jehovah's Witnesses have taught (and continue to teach) that "the last days" or "the conclusion of the system of things" began in 1914.
http://watchtower.org/library/lmn/article_10.htm

(2 Timothy 3:1) In the last days critical times hard to deal with will be here

(Matthew 24:3) Disciples approached [Jesus] privately, saying: "Tell us, When will these things be, and what will be the sign of your presence and of the conclusion of the system of things?"

The Scriptures also call this period 'the second coming' of Jesus or the second "presence" of Jesus. The Scriptures continue to describe a list of signs given by Jesus that would indicate that this time had arrived.

Jehovah's Witnesses noticed something else particularly interesting in Jesus' discussion of these "last days" as recorded in the Gospels:
(Matthew 24:34) Truly I say to you that this generation will by no means pass away until all these things occur.
(Mark 13:30) Truly I say to you that this generation will by no means pass away until all these things happen.
(Luke 21:32) Truly I say to you, This generation will by no means pass away until all things occur.

It seemed logical to suppose that Jesus was referring to the generation which had seen the initiation of these signs in 1914, and this was the understanding of Jehovah's Witnesses for many years.

However, bible scholars among Jehovah's Witnesses realized that Jesus had actually used the expression "this generation" more than a dozen times in the Gospels. Interestingly, none of his other usages was in reference to a lifespan! Instead, Jesus had elsewhere used the term "this generation" to refer simply to a group that was identified with a particular contemporaneous mindset (See Luke 11:29-33).

The November 1, 1995 issue of "The Watchtower" clarified this matter for Jehovah's Witnesses. Witnesses now understand Jesus' words to mean that Jesus' list of signs would continue without real improvement, and the mindset of most humans would remain unconcerned about the impending judgment of Armageddon.

(Matthew 24:37-39) For just as the days of Noah were, so the presence of the Son of man will be. 38 For as they were in those days before the flood, eating and drinking, men marrying and women being given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark; 39 and they took no note until the flood came and swept them all away, so the presence of [Jesus] the Son of man will be.

suzanne's answer says that Jehovah's witnesses say Jesus has returned but nobody saw him, in answer to that, i point her to john 14:9 where Jesus says ''the world will see him no more''. so where in revelation it says ''every eye will see him'', it is refering to every eye seeing his presence told at matthew 24. Jesus is entroned as king in Heaven, and is ruling over Jehovah's Kingdom.

if we recall the events in the garden of eden, we see there that the angel who became known as satan, came to earth and lied to eve. he directly challenged God's right to rule mankind. if God destroyed satan, adam and eve then, what would it look like to all the angels watching? it would seem as though satan was right and Jehovah was a liar. also, Jehovah had said that adams ofspring would fill the earth and titus 1:2 tells us God cannot lie.
rather, He allows satan time to prove his point. he has to try and turn every man and woman alive against the true God. when it is clear he is a liar and there will always be loyal ones, his time will be up and Jehovah will step in and end his lies.
until that time, we must remain faithfiul, fulfilling our commision at matthew 28:19. see also james 2:17, 24,26

As the years pass, Jehovah continues to give us further clarification of truth, including a clearer understanding of his prophetic word. (Proverbs 4:18) In recent years, we have been encouraged to look again with deeper understanding at—among other things—the generation that will not pass away before the end comes. It may be difficult at times to understand such updated explanations, but the reasons for them become clear in due course.

. “This generation” of mankind since 1914 has experienced appalling changes. It has seen the earth drenched with the blood of millions. Warfare, genocide, terrorism, crime, and lawlessness have erupted worldwide. Famine, disease, and immorality have stalked our globe. Jesus prophesied: “You also, when you [his disciples] see these things occurring, know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly I say to you, This generation will by no means pass away until all things occur.”—Luke 21:31, 32.

Yes, the complete triumph of the Messianic Kingdom is at hand! Is anything to be gained, then, by looking for dates or by speculating about the literal lifetime of a “generation”? Far from it! Habakkuk 2:3 clearly states: “The vision is yet for the appointed time, and it keeps panting on to the end, and it will not tell a lie. Even if it should delay, keep in expectation of it; for it will without fail come true. It will not be late.” Jehovah’s day of accounting hastens ever closer.—Jeremiah 25:31-33; Malachi 4:1.

When Christ’s Kingdom rule began in 1914, Satan was hurled down to earth. This has meant “woe for the earth . . . because the Devil has come down to you, having great anger, knowing he has a short period of time.” (Revelation 12:12) That time is short, indeed, compared with the thousands of years of Satan’s rulership. The Kingdom is at hand, and so is Jehovah’s day and hour for executing judgment on this wicked generation!—Proverbs 3:25; 10:24, 25.

Matthew 24:34, 35: “Truly I say to you that this generation will by no means pass away until all these things occur. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will by no means pass away.” Jesus’ words that follow show that ‘nobody knows that day and hour.’ Far more important, he shows that we must avoid the snares surrounding us in this generation. Thus Jesus adds: “For just as the days of Noah were, so the presence of the Son of man will be. For as they were in those days before the flood, eating and drinking, men marrying and women being given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark; and they took no note until the flood came and swept them all away, so the presence of the Son of man will be.” (Matthew 24:36-39) Jesus here compared the generation of his day to that of Noah’s day.—Genesis 6:5, 9; footnote.

This was not the first time that the apostles heard Jesus make this comparison of ‘generations,’ for some days earlier he had stated concerning himself: “The Son of man . . . must undergo many sufferings and be rejected by this generation. Moreover, just as it occurred in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of man.” (Luke 17:24-26) Thus, Matthew chapter 24 and Luke chapter 17 make the same comparison. In Noah’s day “all flesh [that] had ruined its way on the earth” and that was destroyed at the Flood was “this generation.” In Jesus’ day the apostate Jewish people that were rejecting Jesus was “this generation.”—Genesis 6:11, 12; 7:1.

Therefore, in the final fulfillment of Jesus’ prophecy today, “this generation” apparently refers to the peoples of earth who see the sign of Christ’s presence but fail to mend their ways
