Absolutely. I don't know why you were prescribed Topamax, but I assure you that it causes rapid and dramatic weight loss. So much that the FDA is considering its makers' application to prescribe it as a weight loss pill. A word of caution though: Topamax has many severe side effects. It causes neurological behavior that I personally could not tolerate. I took it for migraine and I so wanted to stick with it because there was nothing I hated more than migraine. Until Topamax. It makes you depressed, suicidal, anorexic, jittery, belligerant, lose ability to concentrate, lose your memory, twitching in your face, etc...

Yes. I am on topamax for migranes. I take 50 mg's a day and I have lost 50 pounds in a little over a year. If the dose is higher you will lose more weight. On a page I read about topamax, it says that some people will lose up to 25% of their total body weight while taking it. The doctors won't prescribe it for that though. You have to have seizures or migranes to get it. I hope this helps.

Topamax (Topiramate) is a second generation anticonvulsant medication approved for the treatment of epileptic seizures. Although not approved for weight loss, and probably not a medication that would be prescribed solely for the purpose of losing weight, Topamax appears to produce weight loss in many patients who take it.

It is not intended to be used for weight loss, it is actually an anti-seizure medication and used for the treatment of migraine headaches but everyone I have talked to who has taken it has lost weight.

It is an anti seizure medication that is also used to prevent migraines. Decreased appetite is a possible side effect--possible.
