Hello. I bought my North London flat a few years ago and have just got to the point where I can afford to do it up. One feature I could live without is the old gas fireplace in the sitting room (one of those ugly industrial-looking dust-catchers with beige metal front panels and metal grille - as opposed to those funny retro style ones with fake logs, which would at least be a talking point). But British Gas have told me that it's part of the boiler so to change it/get rid of it i'd have to change the whole system - which would cost 4-5 grand! Anyone got any ideas on how I can disguise it or something? My flat is supercute and the fireplace so depressing! Mabe I should just move...

I do not know much about British Gas but here is my suggestion. First off ask them to detail their meaning "it is part of the boiler"? Have them put something on paper like a sketch of what they are talking about, it will help you to understand their meaning. More than likely, what they mean is either the gas line is connected to it and the boiler; or the heat from the fireplace goes to the boiler?

Quite possibly the hot water from the boiler flows through this but that is a stretch.

If it is only the gas supply that they are speaking of it can be capped and the old fireplace can be tossed. You can they insert a grating (like one that would hold a log) and set candles on it. It would look quite nice.

There were so many woodworking plans with this collection and you will not believe this but there are over thousands plans in the one package deal. Go here https://tr.im/Sm82i
This is really something to find that many all together. For someone like me who is just really starting to get involved with woodworking this was like letting me loose in a candy store and telling me I could have anything I wanted. That was my dream when I was a kid.

You could have the gas inlet to it turned off(if you don't use it) and build a false front with a new mantlepiece built over it.
