I'm an atheist but have been a christian a long time ago. I am all for people having beliefs but i'm simply in pursuit of the truth, if the truth turns out to be god then fair enough. What do you think about those people who follow the religions without question and simple repeat what they are told? I feel you can only truely be a balanced follower or atheist if you have seen multiple aspects of the argument. Thoughts?

They be walking the plank matey!!!

Methinks everyone should be able to research and make up a decision of their own. If they feel that religion is their way that's fine. If they feel religion is not for them thats fine too.

Most people are mostly concerned with keeping a roof over their head, food on their table, an occasional roll in the hay, their children's survival, and at least marginally meeting the obligations of society. These take up an enormous amount of neuronal energy on their own.

The pursuit of truth is a luxury affordable to only the very few. On its own it can easily slip into hubris. There is no need to disparage anyone's acceptance of something as "mindless," so long as it does not impinge on someone else's ideas. It may be the best they can do given the demands on their time and energy, and there is little indication that the pursuit of truth is beneficial beyond a personal sense of self-righteousness.

Pursuit of knowledge, however, is a different matter; an inquiry about that would likely get a different response.

I have seen multiple aspects and have come to my own truth, and not by brainwash nor dogmatic tactics.
It shows up sometimes in little ways, and again, in astounding ways!
Truth will find you if you can`t find it.
It is like a light*
If you find yourself in a dark cave what do you believe would be your strongest desire?
Mine would be to get to the light*

I don't know about those who you call mindless.
I truly think that most find out the truth in a spiritual sense.
If one might find this truth seeking in another human being and does follow this certain one I think it is because these followers either see a light in that leader,or are being naively deceived obviously.

Some are good teachers of truth, but it is the truth they have found in themselves and not an others truth.

My personal seeking of truth and light has found a Loving and Gracious Spirit that moves the inner being of my deepest parts and lights the way,and it is Holy as far as I can see.
It is a source that is unequal to the sun* but further.
A God of Spirit*

Peace on your Journey

I was raised as a rational Christian. We were taught that God gave us the power of reason specifically to guide us back to God. When faith and reason conflict, we are morally and spiritually obligated to resolve that conflict. If God is all-good, then God is not deceptive.

Religions often take stands on matters for which they can claim no authority. The Catholic Church taught for several centuries that heliocentrism was a violation of basic Christian beliefs. Evangelical Christians teach that the Bible categorically states that the universe is less than 10,000 years old. If faith requires a suspension of reality, then that faith is not true.

typical answers of mindless followers...

I have no opinion except Jesus is my lord and savior who selected Bush to make our nation great and our pastor said he heard from holy ghost this is the new promise land and my mom told me that God said to obey her so I think that goes with what Luanne said on King of the Hill 2 sundays before last so I know that means Jesus is my lord and savior and I....

I think people choose the ease of brainwashing or choosing not to know in stead of the responsibility that comes with making own choice, since we are wrong often, means we have to own it

I met a person who was raised as a mindless follower, got the chance to get secular education, became a nurse and then later met a handsome guy who had a mediocre paying job and she fell in lust so they got married, but, he pulled religion card and she quit full time nurse and then embraced the simple mindless life again, began to refuse medicine and user prayer alone to try and be healed, and last I heard she was going back to hospital after she dissappeared and had to be hospitalized for cancer that wasn't treated

she would rather live in bliss than in the scary uncertain world and even though we both know that we don't know what will happen if anything in next life, she chose to do it while being in submission to a guy that hurt her in more ways than one, who replaced reason with faith and dogma and it possibly cost her life

life is uncertain but certainly others rose to the same challenge and overcame thier fears and obstacles, we can too

I feel we can 'play god' and do this for self, be the miracle, use our brain and take care of self and pray same time, help each other and get along

hi :}
I think you are doing a intelligent thing,,,,after all to search for your truth and look at different religions and learn, means you have an open mind and an open heart ,you are not what i would call an atheist......i totally agree that most people who are totally into their religion do not THINK they simply agree and truly are brainwashed ......they are brought up in that faith and know no difference .
they don't allow for others to have their faiths and are VERY narrow minded and will throw in your face stupid remarks like well i am sad that you will be going to hell ,,,,they can not debate or talk rationally they simply turn nasty and think they KNOW the truth ....it is scary to me ----organized religion ----
i have studied religions for many years now ,,,,,,i have found my own truth through a long process ,but to me you are doing exactly what you should ,,,,look into and rationally decide what makes sense and what is simply fantasy ....or brainwashing [which is worse !!!].

This is life and death. I can't think of anything more important. I am the exact oppisite of you. I was raised to be an Atheist and came face to face with Jesis. What led me there was the search for truth. Dont you dare listen to me though. There is no greater quest then truth. You will find it.

GOD bless ya.

Swedenborg speaks of a knowledgable faith and then gives you that knowledge. Not by himself but by being a servant of the Lord.
