One that talks TO you and not AT you. S/he should explain everything during an exam in words you can understand instead of trying to look really smart.

If you are looking for a good vet my best advice is to go on word of mouth from your friends and neighbours. Most vets I know (and I know hundreds...maybe thousands) are animal lovers and want what is best for your pet, this doesn't however make them good vets.
A good vet is someone who not only cares for and about your animal but someone who will take the time to talk to the owner about concerns, explain things well etc...
Most of all a good vet is one that continues education and keeps up to date on recent procedures and medicines. Someone who is progressive about animal care, someone who takes pride in his work and will go the extra mile.
So ask around, don't pick the best yellow pages ad. Visit the clinic and see if they will show you around. Talk to the staff to see if they are happy and helpful (it is a team effort).
Soapbox time to answer the first 2 replies- Why is it that vets should work for free? After years of University, long hours in sometimes horrible conditions (farm visits etc...) what makes the general public think that it is not a business?? It takes as long to get a vet degree as it does to become a GP and they make heaps more than vets...HEAPS!! How can a vet buy a home if they don't charge for consults? How can a vet treat more patients if nobody pays him? For all of those who work...would you work for free? Just because animals are involved it doesn't take the responsibility off of the owner, afterall it is the owner that acquires the pet not the vet.
Sorry to rant but it is really one of the few positions where people complain all the time about having to pay, I wonder why these people buy themself a pet! All animate objects, humans, dogs, insects, fish etc... get sick at some point so it stands to reason they may need medical attention one day.

One that shows compassion to you and your dog no matter what the reason you have brought the pet in.
Another good sign that you have a good vet is if the vet is patient when dealing with the animal. The animal is scared to be there even if nothing major is wrong, and a vet can't just get aggravated.

A good vet is one that truly cares about animals and are not in this line of work just for the money.

A good vet should:
-take the time to listen to your concerns
-answer your questions and put any confusing vet terms into lay language
-spend time getting to know your dog and his/her history on the first visit
-be able to admit if he/she doesn't know something and refer you to someone who does
-not remove your pet from your sight for treatment without first explaining the procedure and receiving your permission
-take your concerns seriously
-provide you with literature/direct you to resources to help you make informed decisions about your pet's treatment
