Yankee has the most correct answer so far.
The "Darian Gap" section never got built, likely for drug trafficking reasons. Guinness Book of World Records expects you to use surface transport (i.e. a ship) to get around that if you are going for a new record (currently 22 or so days, I think).
An SAS group did hack their way through the Darian Gap once but they are the British equivalent of our Navy Seals/CIA combined.
Tim Cahill's "Road Fever: A High-Speed Travelogue" is funny, well-written and describes the record setting drive from (almost) Tierra del Fuego to Prudhoe Bay. It covers the hassles, logistics, shipping, letters of credit, etc that are needed.
You can't actually back the wheels of your Winniebago into the Arctic Ocean - there's a security checkpoint 9 miles south at Deadhorse. But you can take a tour ($35, MUST reserve in advance) and dip your toe in. Older references will talk about private travel stopping 200 miles south. A lawsuit opened up the "Haul Road" (Dalton Highway) all the way to Deadhorse some years ago.

Yes, its called the pan american highway
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pan-American_Highway
You CAN drive it all the way though from alaska to the southern tip of argentina, but I would imagine most people wouldn't think it's
so COOL driving the street through COLUMBIA that is 24/7
guarded by right wing paramilitary groups. I think the would get a real kick seeing a carload of white suburban gringos excitedly
on their way to Argentina. You may spend a few years enroute in a COLUMBIAN prison on trumped-up charges, or held hsotage
by the SHINING PATH liberation group in PERU, but, eventually,
after a few years and 50K in bail money from your family, you should proudly reach the tip of Tierra del Fuego!

Mr Johnson has it right, as well as everyone else that mentions the PAn American highway, with the additional fact thats there's about 100 mile gap that has never been built by Panama to keep Columbians out of their country.
