open source software , like any other software , comes along with a license.one of the uniqueness of Open Source is, it requires free redistribution. What is the rational of doing so?

I would imagine by making something open source, it allows those who are skilled in modifying it can do so, and share it with the rest of the open source community, making it an even better product. Another advantage of open source is security, and an effect of it would be money NOT deposited in Bill Gates' pocket. Open source offers software products to become a custom product, without the expense of building a custom product from scratch. Different industries have different specific needs. There is no single software that everyone finds user friendly across the board.

it's free distribution, but only under the terms of the license. In other words, as long as you distribute it they way the author wants, without making any changes, then you're free to do so.

Some require you to include certain files with the distribution. Others say you can't copy it to a CD or post it on your website, but you may be able to link to if from your site. Things like that.
