I heard that a law was passed where no one can get their license unless they have a social security card.Does that mean for renewals too?I mean,if you got your license before with a tax #,can you renew it still? And does that also include a green card or is it just a social security card?

And if that IS true, isn't it a bit of a catch 22?Sure,if an illegal gets stopped with no license, they could get deported.Good for all the anti-illegals,right?But, if they get in a wreck with an american and seriously hurt the american ?If the illegal has no license,he also has no insurance. So,how would the american get any money for their injuries and car?Technically,it wouldn't be the illegals fault for not having insurance, especially if they had license and insurance before this new law came about.I just wonder what will happen in cases like that?I know I'd rather have insured drivers on the road with me.And you know that no one will quit driving just because of this law.

i like ur thinking tink. i also believe this, if they were able to attain a license & of course insurance i think that many would. but seeing as they can't then we r all being put at risk. they don't choose to not carry a license or ins. but they have no other choice because as we all know many of us don't work right around the block & driving these days is a neccessity. i too would rather have all drivers insured than not.

No. If you can't prove you're here legally, you can no longer renew your driver's license. You are making an assumption that it is a human right to drive. The reality is that when you read your driver's Ed materials, it is clearly stated that driving is a privilege. A privilege that can be lost if rules are not followed. Rules such as not being here legally and therefore not being entitled to the privilege of driving.

Additionally, you have no idea how many people have licenses and registered cars, but have no insurance. The DMV is starting to work on getting more hi-tech so they can monitor the insurance thing when vehicles are registered, but there's a way around that too. All you need to do (here in CA) is get those little red squares that are basically extensions on registering your car...when you have that taped to your back window, expired tags don't get you pulled over and lack of insurance doesn't get red flagged at the DMV since you never even need to register the car.

Tinkerbell, it isn't ok to do something 'just because it is against the law', in fact it is the opposite. It ISN'T ok to do something if it is against the law. They aren't supposed to be driving. Or here.

However, on your basic question, It depends on the state. In California it is now very hard for a non-citizen to get a drivers license barring fraud at the department. However, there are illegals who are still in the 'renew by mail' period that have them.

Chances are if you have to go to the office, you will have to show citizenship. They didn't bother asking me for a Social Security card when I lost my driver's license and had to get a new one. They asked me what my number was and typed it into the Social Security data base to double check. Fortunately for me, I was there and all of my information was as specified. (But then, I use my own Social Security card, and don't have that problem.)

I agree, if they can't get a Driver's License they can't get insurance, and they are not going to stop driving, I think is better they get some kind of special liscence so everybody would be safe. Some of them don't even know the rules or the signs of the road.

what makes you think that just because they have a license, they will have insurance. do you know how many citizens have licenses and still carry no insurance?

it's called it IS their fault they cannot drive without proper papers and it is not the government's fault.

That's another reason why no amnesty and mass deportation is critical, thanks for pointing that out.
