I have tried to do it via the menu system but the option to finalise the disc is not showing as available to be used and I can't find the instruction manual anywhere. I've looked on the Canon website and it's no use at all!

the only possibilitys i can think of are it may not be listed under finalise, it may have finalised automatically and you didn't notice, but i think the best thing for you to do is take it back to were you brought it and if you brought it from jessops then they should be able to help whereas if you brought it from argos all they'd be able to do is replace it so maybe just take it back to jessops and say you brought it there and just ask for help.

Well, I looked on the Canon website and found the instruction manual for your camcorder in about 40 seconds, you will have to open it as a pdf and then go to page 61 which covers finalising.
