There could be. As with any other question, we have two possibilities for determining an answer: we can repeat the answers of authorities we choose to trust, or we can observe the data of experience and draw our conclusions based on reason. The first possibility offers us no sure knowledge, since there is basically no way to evaluate all the competing authorities/traditional answers. The second possibility is fallible, as fallible as our minds, but is the only way of approaching real knowledge. Just because you want there to be life after death, just because many people have believed that there is life after death -- these are not responsible reasons to believe in it. Life may not be what you want. We need to know what it is, not what we wish it were.
There are data of experience which suggest the reality of life continuing after bodily death: NDEs and past-life memories are two examples. When these are examined scientifically and rigorously, they are at least suggestive of life after death. But there is no certainty. And it is cowardly and irresponsible to claim certainty when all you have is a possibility.

why does life have to be a preperation for some thing else?
you live you die you go to heaven? does that honestly sound more meaningfull?
i have said this before that i know of no container that the smashing of which will not also result in the destruction or damage of its contents whats more if the soul is seperate frome the body and therefore does not reside within it then how can you be said to have a soul, are you suggesting that the body is the souls puppet? surely then you're sould could make you're body do anything it could lift it up it could make it fly and yet despite the fact that many people would like to be able to fly they cannot, there is no soul and i happen to think that the fact that this is all that you get of life makes it even the more meaningfull for every moment could be you're last and there is nothing more after that so every momment whatever you are doing it is life and death. now doesn't that sound more meaningfull than life being nothing more than a dress rehersal or a test.

Of course not, that's just human wishful thinking.
For anyone who thinks that something called a 'soul' exists: What exactly do you think a soul is? What properties does it have? What part of 'you' resides in the soul?
If it's postulated that consciousness, or awareness, or sense of self resides in the soul, it's difficult to see how this can be reconciled with the complete oblivion which accompanies general anaesthesia. How could a straightforward chemical, injected into the bloodstream, anaesthetise a soul so that it effectively ceases to exist during this time? If consciousness, in the form of a soul, were some kind of supernatural faculty, it would seem implausible that it could be completely disabled by a chemical.
How about some of the other things which we regard as essential parts of what makes a person what they are? How about love, compassion, reason, empathy, memory, conscious thought, character, 'spirituality' and so on? Well, there is really no plausible doubt that all these things are properties of the physical brain - We can alter all of these properties very simply with alcohol or other drugs, and observe how they change in people who have suffered significant brain damage. Previously placid people become uncontrollably violent, intelligent people become imbeciles, and so on. Stimulate the brain artificially, and the subject reports corresponding mental activity, e.g. 'religious experiences'. We can see from brain research that all these things - thought, emotion, sensation, character traits and so on - are correlated with activity in the brain, and some things can be identified with specific areas of the brain.
So, if all these faculties and characteristics of what we regard as the 'person' reside in the physical brain, as seems to be undeniably the case, and they all cease when the person dies, then what is left to be attributed to a 'soul'? As far as I can ascertain: Nothing. If there is no part of us that can continue after death, then there is no 'afterlife'... and if there is no afterlife, then most of religion is null and void.

There is a choice you can make right now that will determine where you will go when you die. You can either accept Jesus as your savior, repent of your sins, and turn your life over to Jesus and give up your sinful life style and live a rightous good life for Him and go to Heaven Or..... You can refuse to accept Jesus as your savior, and remain the property of the devil ,who as those being a lost soul and living with out Jesus in their life, are the children of the devil, and live with him in hell when you die.
John 8:42-44 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.
43 Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.
44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
your father Gen 3:15, Matt 13:38, Acts 13:10, 2nd Peter 2:14, 1st John 3:10
devil Gen 3:1, Matt 3:7, Matt 12:34, Matt 23:33, Luke 3:7, Rev 20:2
You are either with God or remain the property of the devil. It's not that complicated. This is real and not a joke.
Revelation 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
Revelation 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

No, the illustration with the cell phone is not the same as the body and soul, b/c there is no life after death. Our spirit does not go out and go to heaven because we came from the dust, and to dust we will return. We don't even go to hell. Why would a loving, caring God torment his creations? Think about it.

Rev 20:5 The rest of the dead didn't live until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. (you don't die and go to heaven)
6 Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over these, the second death has no power, but they will be priests Yahweh, and will reign with him one thousand years.
Read your scriptures people!!!

I have always been a strong believer in God but nowdays, with all the wars, genocide, religious hate around the world spwaning more wars and even tsunami's and other natural disasters, I am starting to think that the concept of God is not all so realI afterall.
Of course, I want to believe with all my heart but seeing death and destruction all around makes me wonder why God sits back and does nothing about it. To answer your question, from a non-religious point, it is possible that we live after death but then again, maybe not. I guess we all have to stand in line and find out. Think of it this way, would you want to live after death? is it something that you would want to enjoy for eternity? in the end its just another experience in life and in death.

wishful thinking.
and no-one can present any evidence (worth a damn) that it exists - just like Santa... sorry.
Why are we happy with the concept that it is good enough for every other living being on the planet to be born die cease to exist - but not us? Get over it and make the best of your existance - allowing churches to steal your existance on the promise of a future prize that can never be demonstrated?!
Do you want to buy some magic beans?

Yes of course. Ask for God's forgiveness. Trust in Jesus as Lord and Savior. We live by faith and we have assurance that there is a Heaven when we die. It is not automatic though - we must confess with our mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in our heart that God raised him from the dead, then we will be saved (saved from our sins that is). Blessings.
