Here is a simple answer: You know electric motors, right? like the ones in small toy cars. In those, electriciy makes the motor move by converting electricy into magnetism.
a dynamo, or generator, is exactly the same, but the other way around:
it converts movement into electricity by generating changing magnetic fields.
If you have access to a small electric motor (like a meccano motor) try this:
put a lever in the motor shaft.
connect a light bulb (a hand lantern bulb) to the motor.
Then, turn the lever with your hand. You will see the a dim light ignite the bulb.
In order to increase the light, you can connect a small gear to the shaft, then another, larger gear to the first one and a a lever to the large gear. This will let you increase the speed of the motor. Sorry, the dynamo, because now, you HAVE a dynamo

The dynamo is an electrical generator that is turned by the force of water.

So in dams, water is channeled through tubes that turn the gears in some big generators (dynamos) and create electricity.
