In my opinion, yes. In the 30's and 40's and in to the late 50's boxing actually was taught in almost every major city school. The purpose was to teach young men discipline and self respect. Then there was shift along with the peace craze and parents were dead set against their children hitting other children and so went the boxing instruction.
There's a lot of kids who aren't cut out for college, for whatever reason, some, even though good athletes will not recieve scholorships. Boxing will allow them other options, is boxing for everyone? Absolutely not, just like tennis, football, track, cross country and any other high school sport isn't for everyone, but the option should be there.
Boxing gives one confidence, it teaches one selfrespect without self-respect, you can not respect others. It teaches people the value of staying in condition. There are so many pluses they far out way the negatives.
Thanks for the fantasic question Patricia!

Answer to the above: Theres a College in Michigan that gives boxing scholarships.

No. It should not be taught in schools. Boxing isn't a sport you can pick up and play. It takes a long time to learn and it is rigorous training program that many kids probably won't be dedicated enough to do.
Another reason is that it is easy to get hurt. You get gloves on kids and you don't think they punch eachother?
Besides these reasons, the main reason why I don't think they teach it anymore in schools is because not too many coaches know how to box. Plus with school budgets consistently being cut, how would they pay for speed bags, hand wraps, gloves, and other equipment for 1000 kids? What about the common wrist injury?
I was a boxer for 5 years and I would have loved to have boxing in gym class.
If a girl needs self defense, she needs to learn it from a self defense trainer, not a boxing gym teacher. I doubt that a girl who knows how to box will be able to hold off an attacker.

Probably not a popular answer but if you have been a part of a gym, you will see that you can't train 1000 kids in a 40 minute period effectively.

Yes. Boxing would keep a lot of kids in shape and teach them discipline. People are always complaining about the obesity rate in kids these days, well having a boxing program in schools would certainly help that. Boxers are some of the most well conditioned people on the planet. Kids can learn not only how to box, but a healthy life style at an early age. And boxing has kept a lot of youngsters (including me back in the day) out of trouble. It teaches discipline, confidence, and self worth. I'm all for it.

Sure, why not? Since wrestling is already a part of many school sports; it would not surprise me to see boxing too. What I would like to see is equal time men and women's boxing. It can be beneficial for both sexes.

I don't quite know about boxing for scholarships, though. How about you?
