Who the hell are they calling??? Parents do you honestly think this is responsible parenting?

And don't even give me the cr@p about they need to be in contact with you when they are out... they shouldn't be out without parental or another adult supervision (remember Holly and Jessica??)

Oh in that case... give the children what they want.... god forbid lets be their parents.... lets be their buddies instead... no wonder you are all raising horrible little eejits.

I'm sorry? You can't keep tabs on a 10 year old? Well I'm sorry, but as their parent, you should be! Holly and Jessica's phone didn't save them did it? You disgust me John/Jen.

Yes Angel... while we're at it.... lets give them boxes of matches to play with and bottles of Cider.... after all.... if they "want" it then surely we should indulge the little angels.

Taylor... widely reported that those poor little girls parents were too busy getting drunk at their BBQ to even notice their kids had left the house. Trust me, I know a lot about this case, and none that I can go into on a public forum. So.... learn from tragedies...

The 50% figure was quoted in the news... whether that is over zealous reporting I don't know... it does seem high to me.

Do you know what.... you people scare the hell out of me.

Do you parents even know about "toothing" of phone? Or how about spam texts that invite your children to chat or view sites on their mobiles that they shouldnt be...... unfortunately the phone is no longer just a voice communication tool.... it can be a dangerous product for a 10 year old.

wow, you certainly feel strongly about this don't ya? deeps breaths!!!
I have to say, i don't agree that small children should have mobiles because they simply don't need them. Children grow up fast enough as it is. Giving them mobiles at a young age is right up there with children's bras and suggestive logos on children's clothing. Let them enjoy their childhood while they still have it. When i was little (and before anyone has any cheeky thoughts, i'm only 21!) i had to stay where my mam could find me, if i went anywhere i had to tell her where i was going (but not before asking!) and i had to be back at a certain time. Why can't modern parents instill the same sort of discipline? Mobile phones just seem to be a lazy way of keeping a tab on your children!

I have to disagree with you and I really dislike what you said about Holly and Jessica's parents, I found it a little harsh.

You can buy mobiles which allows barring, so parents can control who their children are calling. Also it can give parents that little bit more comfort knowing they can contact their child when ever they want, as you cannot stop a child wondering off, I know i did when I was young, I wasn't supposed to cross the road or go round the block, but sometimes I disobeyed my mum! Also mobiles are like tracking devices, the police can find out where the last signal was picked up from a phone, so in the worst case scenario they could narrow their searches.

As for Holly and Jessica, they were murdered by a school caretaker and the fiance of the girls classroom assistant. These would of been the last two people I would of suspected, till this case came to light. Rightly or wrongly you expect our schools to only hire people they have done a total back ground check on, and I can only second guess that the poor girls parents thought the same.

I have only listed the pros above, and I am aware of the cons which are a child may be attacked and mugged for their phone. Maybe a Police Officers opinion is needed, to say whether or not the pros out weigh the cons?

how far under 10 are they?
My 4 yo, plays with toy mobiles she insists are real
I know where your coming from but. It'll be a few years before I have to decide weather my iccle girl has a mobile or not. At this point in time I'm not sure one way or the other.
For: I can always call or text her if she's at a friends house (agree not playing out and about for some years yet)
She can play games on it.
Against: Bakes brains or maybe not but I sure as hell wouldn't be paying her bills, so texting is fine.
humm can't think of many againsts.

"Parents do you honestly think this is responsible parenting?" At the end of the day why is it bad for a child to have a phone?

Please post another question and give your argument fully.

No way is that figure correct. More like 15 to 20% tops. They use their mobiles to call friends after school, to take photos, listen to music, play games on,video, and all the other stuff you can get phones to do. How dare you drag Holly and Jessica and their parents into your so wrong idea. You obviously don't know all the circumstances surrounding their deaths, what their community was like, etc. You're saying their parents were irresponsible, and that all kids who have mobiles are left to their own devices. Get real and think before you ask stupid questions, especially where 2 dead children are involved

I'd will have to sit on the fence, I agree that they do not need to call anyone really.

Texting is killing the english language and the art of conversation.

I have to say that it may be a good idea to have one in case of emergencys, but it is possible to have a phone with that facility only. You can't lock your kids up because of events like those surrounding Holly & Jessica. Although I agree they shouldn't be out galavanting at that age.

It is your choice not to let your children have a phone, that does not make you a better or worse parent than anyone else!

yesterday, a 14 year old in South Carolina who had been kid napped 12 days ago was able to text message her mother to let her mother know that she was being held captive in a bunker outside of some guys home. the authorities were able to find and rescue the girl and arrest her kidnapper.

my child is 10. I gave her a cell phone for her 9th birthday. my child is very responsible and mature for her age. I do not suffocate her and eagle eye her every move (i don't have to - she's a very good kid - not perfect, by no means, but very good). people who do not allow their children breathing room, have insecure and immature children, the kind that get on my last nerve. I can't stand an overly sheltered, baby-ish, child and that's what you get when you have them jammed up your @$$ 24/7. Just because she's off with another adult I trust doesn't mean I don't need to ask her a question or need to tell her something. You are just jealous. Get over it.

It's insane unless there are certain circumstances and most families dont have those certain circumstances. My kids are 12 and 8 and there is a phone available at every friends house and at school if needed.

We do have a family cell phone that I do let my oldest daughter use when the minutes are unlimited (weekends and weeknights after 7) only so she does not hog up the land line and so far she has taken it once to a crowded event she went to with another friend and adult just in case they got seperated. This does not happen often though.

We do not have text messaging or mobile internet access.

I feel you may be a little over zealous.
There are many children who do rattle on the mobile for hours but not 50% of all 10 year olds.
The vast majority have the phones for safety reasons.
Our Son (age 12) has the phone for the school run and trips out with friends.
Any £10 credit (monthly allowances)soon puts limits on talk time and teaches them self control.
