Neither, for most it's a coping mechanism...it starts to get them over a difficult time & then it's too late. Everyone deals with life issues differently, some are just more noticable than others.

Neither. Character flaws could start addiction, and addiction could lead to mental illnesses, but addition is just a psychophysical compulsive behavior which constitutes a normal reaction to pleasant stimuli.

I believe it is a little of both. Maybe that person had the need to fit in more than others, Popular people have issues too. Addiction also will run in the family and can be dealt with. if you are asking this for a role, you really need to find someone you know who is really messed up and go with them for a few days and see what they go through to get there next fix. Hope I helped a little.

Certainly not a mental illness - probabily a character flaw... However I would say i'm addicted to answering questions on yahoo answers - does that mean I need to see a Psychologist? :o

Addiction is an illness. But not necessarily a mental illness.

depends what ur addicted to. some people have addictive personalities, making them intense, but certainly NOT mental. then there is DEPENDANCY.eg, anti-depressants,cannabis etc. my past experience of people who use these drugs do have a mental illness of some kind.

Both, people have obsessive behavioural patterns that lead to addiction.
