Hi there, I've got a Sony HandyCAM camcorder and I currently connect it to my PC vis it's USB cable... The problem with that is that the highest image I can transfer is 320 x 240 - which is useless!

What can I do to be able to get a higher res DV onto my computer (i.e. PAL resolution would be nice which is something like 512 x 384 i think?!)

I have been told that because I have Adobe Premier, I can just buy a firewire cable and stream using that - I tried this but couldn't get it to work - is that because I used a non "SONY" firewire cable? (i.e. Sony sell their cables as an "i-link" cable - I thought that was the same as a firewire cable!?!?)

If that's not possible, Can I buy some sort of Video Capture card that allows high res DV capture?!?

i-link is firewire, Sony just renamed it. The firewire import into the firewire port on the PC (if indeed you have one, if you do then you require a 4pin to 6 pin firewire cable)should work and is the best option. It might be worth trying another piece of software just to see if premier is at fault. If still no joy then it's windows that's at fault- boot from the install CD and choose the repair option.

I just bought an i-link cable (firewire) and have successfully transferred by Sony mini DV recording to my PC for editing. The quality is excellent. NB In fact the USB never worked! So I think you need the special i-Link cable.

Connect thru USB can only do USB streaming which functions as a webcam. (And you can't do firewire streaming)

As far as I know, Yahoo and MSN messenger support USB webcam only.

If you want DV resolution, you have to record on the DV tape then use the firewire to transfer your video to your PC.

i-link, 1394 and firewire are all the same thing, Is your Handy cam a DV type? If so you should be able to capture in full quality.

Get your self a replica of top Studio and a firewire connection. Load your DV onto your computer by ability of the firewire. Do your edits. once you write/copmile your masterpiece be sure you verify the output placing - mpeg1/2/4, avi, and so on. you will get great outcomes.

Go to www.sonystyle.com and enter you model Camcorder to look for the drivers needed by windows to 'see' your device.

I don't believe it's the cable.
