Okay I recently found out my daughter would be served a breakfest at school. Some days she does choose to eat at home. When they serve at school its at 8:30am. Then she has to wait untill 12:45pm to get a lunch. She is in second grade. I considered this too long of a period without a snack in between for a child required to work while at school. Should there be a snack time in between the two meals or am I overly concerned?
No rude people please.

The school calls the breakfest (breakfest/snack). My daughter is 7 years old.

That is a long time. My kids eat at home (6:45am) then the youngest has lunch at 10:45 and snack at 1pm. Even with this schedule he needs a little snack in the afternoon. Last year his schedule was wacky like the one you describe. I talked to his teacher and she allowed me to send x-tra snack (something small) and water for him to nibble on during the day.

You should be concerned, a child's blood sugar can greatly affect mood...the proof would be my 7yo. When he gets home if for some reason I can not get him a snack, I need to be prepared to deal with crying whining and extreme frustration. Not the best attitude to get homework done. However, 1 fruit juice Popsicle and he is a new man.

Try talking to your child's teacher, if she is not helpful you need to talk to the principal. BEST OF LUCK!

My children have to catch the bus at 6:45 so thankfully they have breakfast at our school. It is from 7:45 till school starts at 8:15. My son eats lunch at 11:10 and my daughters class eats at 11:30 then all elementary grades have snacks at 2:15 and the parents take turns sending these in. 4 hours in between meals is about right. My oldest is in High school and eats lunch at 12 then doesn't eat again until the bus gets home at 4:30. Just make sure your daughter is getting a good breakfast and she should be ok.

My son is also 7. He actually, eats breakfast at home. Then they have snack at 9:00. Then lunch at 12:00. Then they allow the kids to have a water bottle in the afternoon. School is out at 2:50. I always worry about my son being thirsty and hungry too. I would suggest a snack if I was you. By the time she gets her food it's probably, 1:00. My son's school doesn't have recess. They use that time for snack then they can play for a few minutes. Hope this helps, I know where you are coming from!

My 2 oldest kids are in elementary school. They eat breakfast before they go to school. And then lunch is at 11:30 A.M. I would think that 12:45 is a little late for school to be serving lunch. But as long as your daughter eats a good breakfast she should be fine until lunch time. If she has trouble with hunger or concentration problems do to going so long in between meals. You can always suggest a mid-morning snack to her teacher. Or bring the subject up at the next PTA meeting.

My daughter is 6 years old and eats breakfast at school also. She gets to school around 7 and eats breakfast then. Then she has lunch around 12. Her class has recess at some point during the day and the kids can bring a snack from home if they want to. Just think of it this way. Your kid is probably at school around 7 hours a day and eats 2 full good meals. That sounds like enough to me. I know when my daughter gets home she is ready for a snack though.

I say she needs a snack. The time she has to wait in between is a very long time. See if they have a recess or something that she can have a snack at. Our school here has lunch around 11(3rd grade), breakfast from 7:30-8:00 and a recess in between that you can have a snack at. I would definitely bring it up to the school though.

Most schools dont have morning snack at that age but many do have afternoon snack time (my daughter still has afternoon snack in 3rd grade).

If she eats a healthy filling breakfast that includes whole grains, she should be fine although I agree at 12:45 is late for lunch. I used to complain about one year when my daughter went to school by 9am and had lunch 2 hours later LOL.

My children start school at 9.00, so they have breakfast sometime between 8 and 8.30 and do not have lunch at school until 1.30...way too long if you ask me. They do however have a fruit snack at 10am in which they are only allowed a piece of fresh fruit and they are allowed water bottles in the classroom which they may drink from at any time... then of course there is recess at 11am where they may have a snack. I still think the gap between breakfast and lunch is too long but they don't seem to complain and are doing well at school so I guess they have adjusted to it.

That is quite a long time. My son is 11 and in 5th grade and they still get a snack at like 9:45..then they have lunch around noon. Maybe you should bring your concern up to the principal.

Some kids do need something to eat but most can wait and load up if they are very hungry. If your daughter has a good big breakfast she shouldn't feel hungry. It really depend on your childs appetite really, if she isn't have any gastric pain then she's fine. Can she have a milk drink during class? It all depend on the school policy.
