Is it a thing that resides within us? Is it tied to one of our organs? Is it an innate part of our being and not a thing unto itself? Is it an expression of our spiritual nature and not a thing or part?

Soul is the conscious spiritual particle which gives life to the material body. Soul is not part of us, it is us. We are spirit soul. We are not this body. Spirit soul is described in Vedas as being of size of one ten thousandth part of the tip of hair and situated in the heart of our physical body. Spirit soul never dies, it transmigrates from one body to another. But we have an eternal identity in the spiritual world as servants of the Supreme Lord. This human form of life is especially meant for realizing our eternal nature as spirit soul. If we simply spend our life taking care of the needs of the body, we are no better than animals.
The science of soul is described in great detail in the Bhagavad-gita, especially chapter 2:

Bhagavad-gita 2.17: That which pervades the entire body you should know to be indestructible. No one is able to destroy that imperishable soul.
BG 2.20: For the soul there is neither birth nor death at any time. He has not come into being, does not come into being, and will not come into being. He is unborn, eternal, ever-existing and primeval. He is not slain when the body is slain.
BG 2.22: As a person puts on new garments, giving up old ones, the soul similarly accepts new material bodies, giving up the old and useless ones.
BG 2.23: The soul can never be cut to pieces by any weapon, nor burned by fire, nor moistened by water, nor withered by the wind.
BG 2.24: This individual soul is unbreakable and insoluble, and can be neither burned nor dried. He is everlasting, present everywhere, unchangeable, immovable and eternally the same.

You are a living soul.Genesis 2:7 says God formed the man(Adam) from the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man came to be a living soul. And Joshua 11:11 says "they went striking every soul with the edge of the sword". Here the soul is said to be something that can be touched by the sword. So the souls could not have been spirits. Finally Genesis 1:20,21,24 talks about when God created the animals. In verse 20 he said "let the waters swarm forth a swarm of living souls" 21"and God proceeded to create the great sea monsters and every living soul that moves about". 24 "and God went on to say: Let the earth put forth living souls according to their kinds, domestic animal and moving animal and wild beast of the earth according to its kind". So everything man, animal, bug are living souls or beings.

Ever watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Yeah, I know, it's stupid, but I think it gave one of the simplest and best answers to your question. A soul is simply that thing inside of us that tells us what is right or wrong and makes us feel guilty for the bad things we've done. It's not tied to any organ and some people simply don't have them, such as Charles Manson or Jeffrey Dahmer. I truly believe that not everyone has a soul, simply because some, like the two listed, don't feel remorse for the lives they destroyed.

The soul is said to be the essential, immortal energy of a being (compare to spirit). In most religions, a soul is strongly connected to the afterlife, but opinions vary wildly even within a given religion as to what happens to the soul after death. Many feel that the soul is immaterial, while some feel that it may indeed be material. Many Atheists and materialists reject the concept of a soul.

The concept of a soul is difficult to define because there have been so many different ideas as to what it "really" is. At its most basic, a "soul" is some sort of immaterial, supernatural essence which is believed to provide the lifeforce and genuine "self" to each person. Some believe that only people have souls, some believe that only sentient beings have souls, and some believe that all living entities have souls.

your soul is a gift from God given to humans only. Animals don't have one and I believe if we start to clone clones may not have one either. Your soul is not a body art or organ but an entity that is mysteriously invisible but like the Spirit of God we can see what it does. It possesses volition and conscience but is not to be mistaken with the brain. It has memory but unlike the brain it feels and lives forever.

Lev 7:27 Whatsoever soul it be that eateth any manner of blood, even that soul shall be cut off from his people.

God breathed into us breath of life and man(woman) became a living soul. That's what the Bible says. It is a spiritual being inside us. When we die, our soul goes back to God. He owns it still. But we must have God's forgiveness before we can get to Heaven - it is not automatic.

the soul is a part of a person which can never been seen while the body lives. it contains the essence of what wisdom and knowledge one gathers while on this plane of existence. the soul is contained within the body and upon death of the physical body it is released to travel to another plane of existence there to continue on learning and teaching until it is time to return to THE CREATOR OF US ALL.
