My brother is 18, and he cannot sleep. He is very tired during the day but at night cannot go to sleep. He has had to take days off work due to this problem, he is too tired. He takes herbal sleeping tablets but they do no good. What can he do, he is going out of his mind!

Your brother could try the herbal tea made of chamomile flowers. Chamolmile tea, readily available from your supermarket or corner shop, has a calminative effect upon the body. Your brother needs to allow his mind to wander out of control in the minutes before sleep. There is a routine to be followed before going to sleep - it's called winding down. Try the tea and thoughts which are pleasing and restful. Do not watch tv before sleep. Do not listen to any music. Do not hold loud discussions or arguments. Stay calm. Sleep [Hypnos goddess of sleep] will come.

By all accounts he has got into a bad sleeping routine. He sounds as though he rests during the day, and then of course can't sleep at night. try and fight this tired feeling for 48 hours and do something physical during the day and make a specific time to go to bed, after a relaxing bath and a hot drink. once he is back in a day/night routine he will fall into the sleep pattern again. Good Luck !! I have had a similar problem when I stopped my years long night duties. the body clock will adjust again with a bit of help from him. Good Luck

First of all don't let him take any sleeping tablets at all without doctor's go a head and guidance. It is a difficult question to answer without knowing what is his typical daily routine. Perhaps, he has just got used to going to bed very late or something-if he this is the case perhaps he can try getting into a routine where he goes to bed around 11pm for example - to get back into the habit of a sleeping pattern. The point of this is to get him back into a normal sleeping pattern. It won't work straight away but getting into the habit will help him towards it.

Also he should avoid drinking too much coffee, tea or cola drinks several hours before sleep and try to relax before sleeping by having warm baths.

Secondly, he may have something bothering him - stress perhaps . Have him see a doctor to discuss the issues of why he can't sleep. The doctor is always there to help.

I know this sounds very "young", but your brother needs to introduce a getting-ready-for-bed routine. If it works for youung children, then it cannot hurt for older ones too.
In the evening, as it gets later, start to wind down the activities you are doing. Before it gets too late, run a warm bath, but not too hot. Pour in some lavendar bubbles or lavendar oil as this is a main sleeping aid. Do not spend too long in the bath, 20 mins or so is fine. If you have a lamp in the bedroom, use this instead of the main light, as this will make you more alert. Do not watch TV or sit in front of a computer, as this will wake your mind up. Once in bed, make sure that the room is dark, and there are no loud noises or disturbances. You can read a book, but not longer than 20mins or so. You can also get lavendar oil to place on ur pillow in little drops. Then, it is a case of just trying to relax. If you are a person that is of an active mind, and you constantly think of things before you sleep, it will not happen. Instead, a little trick i use, is to write down a list of things that you need to get done, remember etc before your going to bed routine. That way, you have remembered them all for tomorrow and they should no longer keep you awake.
Hope some or all of this helps!

Maybe go to the doctors and get some sleeping tablets. or he could try staying awake all day then at night he will have to sleep. there could be something that he is worried about, or something that has happened that makes him not want to sleep in the night. Maybe talk to him about going to the doctors and ask him if there is anything wrong. since he is you're brother you could usually tell if something is bothering him by looking at his eyes or where he holds his arms when you ask him or what tone of voice he uses.

He could try a number of things to help him get a good night's sleep. Avoid too much alchohol, drink hot milk instead of tea and coffee before bed, opt for a light snack rather than something heavy. Try some physical activty in the evenings. Soak in a hot bath, just before going to bed, adding a few drops of lavender oil to both your bath and pillow, whilst listening to some relaxing music. Try to avoid napping during the day.
Hope this helps.

Easy, find out whats bothering him ??? ask him to post it and we'll have a bash. Simply put if he cannot sleep at night but is tired during the day, he does get tired so he's either a vampire in waiting or somethings on his mind !

Tell your brother to drink nothing but water. I know water can taste bland but he can buy the flavored waters that have no calories or sugar. this will help to clean out his system and keep him away from caffeine. Plus tell him to go and see his doctor if this continues after only drinking water for a few weeks as he may have a more serious problem like sleep apnea that only a doctor can fix. I hope this helps your brother.

Think back to when you were kids, bedtime business was always the same, supper, small drink, pee, wash, clean teeth, story or quiet time - or something along those lines, but always the same. When something different was happening sleep was impossible.
Your brother should try to set a quiet routine, go back to when he was able to sleep, and not worry too much about not sleeping as this will keep him awake.
