Depends where, and how, you are commuting into London. If you go by tube then West Ruislip is nice.
Further afield then I concur with Kent, Buckinghamshire (Marlow, Wendover) or the shires to the North - Cambridgeshire. Lincolnshire near Grantham maybe a bit too far I guess it is on the 125 route to King's Cross?
Try Rightmove.co.uk for the House Price side of things, just put the county in eg Kent and it will display all houses in that county.
UpMyStreet.co.uk should give you an idea of neighbourhoods.

It really depends on how much you have to spend and how large a house you are looking for. Guildford, Ascot, anywhere in Surrey is lovely with large houses and good schools but can be expensive. Haywards Heath, Bexley and places near Brighton are also nice, but once again budget determines all!

Brighton - fantastic location, 50 mins from London, very cool vibe, property still pretty reasonable, loads to do, great choice of schools, University in central town and surrounding areas, access to Sussex Downs, cycling, walking, Hove Lagoon windsurfing, kayaking, sailing, theatre, cinema, palace, museums, large library, great shopping, I could go on...
