My daughter is 12 years old, she is begging me to get her a cell phone. I think she can wait another year, but her father thinks she is ready to have one now.

oops...
I'm a single dad.
i think it depends on family need.
i work 40 hours a week...
My twin 10 year old girls have cell phones so they can call me if a problem arises at school.
School doesn't have a pay phone...the kids can use the office phone...which is always busy when the secretary is there.

I have a cell phone service where calls between our phone numbers are free.

I put the phone in their bag each morning before school...I take it out of the bag each evening after I get home.

It's a tool...not a toy.
They have card they can use for friends...but they pay for that with allowance money.

My sister is 13 and has used $10 in 6 months. She barely used the thing. Her reason was if she was out somewhere she could call us to pick her up, or let her know what is happening or not going to be home. Genuine reasons.

12 is way too young! the people she would talk to she'd see at school. I think it would be a waste of money and within a couple of months the novalty will ware off, the new latest mobile will be out and she'll be begging for that one.

Personally, my opinion on this is why does a child need a cell phone of their own? The only logical reason is so you could keep track of their safety, etc., but a 12 year old? Where is the sanity with parents these days.

I think your daughters father is right 12 is a good age for a child to get there own cell phone. This is the age when they are going to start wanting to be more independant, e.g. travelling to school on their own, so it will also be good for safety reason's too, if your child loses her travel money or has detention and has to stay in school late she can contact you to let you know.

Wait till there old enough to pay for it them self.... Kids are given to much today... Why does a 12 yr old need one ????? IF she is not with you.. She should be with a friend that you know is with there parents.. And you should know those parents... Thats the problem today...... People drop there kids off and let them go... ""Here call me when you are ready to come home""" OR call me if you have problems... Take the cell phones away.. Keep your kids with you... NO need for cell phones ......

I agree with you. You should wait at least a year. You can get her the cell phone wear she can only Dial four number. You choose the number she can call like home, your cell phone etc. Then she will not abuse the service and it is like a cell phone.

A child should have a cell phone when they are old enough to pay for it on their own . I have raised 2 kids and i learned they never really appreciated anything untill they had to pay for it themselves they took better care of it. I am sorry but i am from the old school. I believe children have too much these days.

well I'm 18 and i didn't get my first cell till i was 17 and that's only because i paid for it myself. personally i think she can wait a yr or 2 even to me cell phone come with trouble but mom its up to you, you know your daughter best and i bet your the only one who really knows whats best for her so don't worry you'll make the right decision no matter what it is an if she doesn't agree with what you decide then say "hey who's mom?" "that's what i thought" lol that's what my mom always said ya gada love em
