A birdie is one under par on a hole, a eagle is two under par on a hole, and a handicap is the number of strokes that person gets to even out the field. This is the simple way to put it, A person who has a 20 handicap shot 20 over par on average. Now if your a 10 handicap, when you play against the other person you you would get 10 strokes One stroke on the 10 hardest holes.

The other have it mostly right except for the handicap parts. Par for a hole is the number of shots you should get the ball in the hole. On a regulation course the hole are all Par 3, Par 4 or Par 5. A birdie is getting the ball in at 1 under par, an Eagle is 2 under par, and a double Eagle is 3 under par. A hole in one on a par three is the same as an Eagle. In the last year on the PGA tour there was a hole in one on a par 4 (first time in PGA history) that scored as a double Eagle.

Handicap is a little more difficult. It is not simply the average of your score over par. For instance if you average a score of 80 on a course that is par 72 (Total of par on all 18 holes), you average 8 over par. That doesn't necessarily give you a handicap of 8. There is a mathmatical formula for figuring your handicap using the course rating and slope as well as your score. The handicap is then used to even the playing field of competitors. (Not used rofessionally). If you have a 10 handicap and your competitor has a 15 handicap, you would give hime 5 strokes. He would subtract one stroke off his score on each ofthe five hardest holes on the course. The scorecard will show the rankings of the holes.

ok when you go golfing each hole has a par. meaning a certain number of strokes to get the ball in the hole. So with that said a birdie is one stroke better than the par.(ex. if it is a par 4, birdie would be 3 strokes) An eagle is 2 strokes better than par. the average par on an 18 hole course is 72 so a handicap is when your average score is 80 then your handicap is 8. so when playing against someone who has a handicap of 2 you must beat them by 6 strokes.

Actually they must beat you by six strokes to tie. You score 80Raw - 8Hcp = 72Corrected Score
They score 74Raw - 2Hcp = 72Corrected Score
80 - 74 = 6 strokes raw score they must beat you by to tie.
