Not really smell but to detect & to "hear". Insects give out pheromones which are chemicals which act as a form of communications between insects of the same species & colonies.

I think u meant 'insects'. big difference.
Anyway they dont actually smell with their antennas, they use it to sense instead.
communication signals are read and interpreted between insects. it is not used for smelling
