There is an irony here and not merely the violence. The pope was speaking about religious freedom, peace and dialogue in the context of academic communication between faculties at the University of Bonn. He quotes dialogue between a Muslim scholar and a Christian emporer. The Pope, preceding this dialogue, points out surah 2,256 and praises it, which says, "in religion there can be no compulsion." His comment on the emporer was to point out that people, in the face of religious violence, automatically reject that other religion as evil regardless of whether it is or not. Overall, it was a discussion on whether reason was at the core of Islam and presented various Islamic views on the subject as well as Christian views on reason in Christianity. He goes on to discuss the rational response of the Protestant Reformation as well to what it faced in the sixteenth century. He also discussed the loss of the discussion of reason in modern time, an aversion to using reason in Western culture.
I soundly agree with that. The biggest problem with America's two primary political parties is that both have stopped being learning and problem solving organizations. Like Jihadists, the two parties are pandering to emotions and ignoring making the world better.

so if I were to answer this question that "you are a moron who can bring no good to this earth"(which Im not saying just example) according to a quote from someone else who wrote it froma book years ago, you would not be offended or wonder why it is even necessary or relevant to mention that?Remember this is a public speech to the masses not a closed classroom discussing academics of ancient kings. You are trying to get a message to the people on the street.
reactions that are violent are abhorrent to us all, but we need oto look at the whoel story when discussing the subject.
Like if your kid punched his playmate and you asked him why and he indicates "But he said bleep..your mama!" Youd want to admonish/punish him but at the same time bring the insulter to justice as well. I dunno just think a bit .
