the british government introduced a written test for hopeful immigrants to take on english life, yet if the immigrants do not speak english they do not have to take this test, is this fair?

Only the elderly are exempt from the language and culture tests; the assumption is, I guess, that they are beyond redemption. My wife, like many others, rushed through her naturalisation application just before the test came into effect. To prove her English language skills she enclosed (as one of the options permitted) her diploma for her MA in London History.

She, like most historians, think the test is idiotic, and found that it contains factual errors.

I have no intention of seeking naturalisation (I am Swiss and have EEA rights anyway). But if I did, I would take the exam in Welsh, however much study it would take me to learn the language.

Immigration can definitely be unfair. I am a British woman (not even of immigrant parents (not that that should make a difference) but born and bred British as far back as our family tree can be traced) that recently married a foreign man. His visa application was refused. We're now living in seperate countries, and might have to remain that way for about a year, until his appeal goes through. Happy married life! How fair is that? Especially knowing that if I were a British man, and he the wife, the visa would have been granted without delay. B astards.

What???? Is this true, or are you pulling our collective legs? I very firmly believe that it should be mandatory that every immigant into this country speaks the language; if they don't, then rejection should be automatic.

I've also seen so often that small children within a non English-speaking household start school with a disadvantage - they have to learn English before they can learn anything else! Surely this must disrupt their education? It's time the government stopped pandering to the do-gooders and started to use common sense!

Others might say, keep Britain British; sadly the opportunity to do that passed three decades or more ago.

All people who come to this country should be given basic tests to find out how much they understand the language and culture.
If they cannot at least speak some of the language they will encounter all sorts of problems.
All immigrants should have to go into a Residential Hostel where they can learn as much as possible about life in the u.k and they should not be allowed on the streets until they can survive on their own however long it takes

Bizarre.
Good written and spoken English should be an essential prerequisite for prospective immigrants. Inability to take the test should mean automatic exclusion with exemption only for those who offer exceptional specialised skills.

it seems not fair , but at the end of the day the immigrant wants to stay in uk , english country.. and its better for him or her to know the language to make it easy for him / her to communicate and earn his/her living

everything is being done in english here , and if immigrants dont know the language its gonna be mess for all coz they cant express , cant communicate, they really cant do nothing then a 3rd class labour , even for that u need to know this for communication

Nothing the government does on immigration is fair ---- everything is to the detriment of the indiginous population. The government are a bunch of spineless politically correct cretins

Fair for whom? The applicant or the indigenous people who have to communicate with these individuals on a day to day basis? The applicant should be made to learn basic English as a condition of residency.

If you're going to move to a country, you need to follow the laws of the land. If those are the laws and are equally enforced to everyone, I would say YES this is fair.

If you don't like it, don't move there.
