Dengue fever is one of the kinds of viral illnesses that can cause a drop in white blood cells in the blood. This often confuses doctors who associate and increase in white blood cells with infections. The mechanism of the drop in white cells involves increased expression of proteins that cause the cells to adhere to the endothelial cells that line blood vessels. The white cells aren't gone they are just hanging out for a while.

The same effect can cause a transient reduction of platelets.

However, if the drop in platelets is also associated with the appearance of petechiae (small red spots in the skin), the drop in platelets could be related to a syndrome called Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever.

The Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever syndrome usually occurs in children. The patient would have had one of the several strains of dengue and then a while later get infected with a different strain.

The syndrome does not seem to happen with each additional dengue strain infection so it is unlikely that an adult with a drop in platelets is coming down with Dengue Hemorrhagic fever....unless he/she is foreign to dengue endemic areas or is one of the rare folks who managed to get to adulthood without getting infected by all the strains.

The disease Dengue lasts about 5 - 6 days, is very uncomfortable, may be associated with petechiae and then it goes away suddenly without lasting effects...if dengue hemorrhagic fever did not occur.
