Historically, buns have been sold in packages of six or 12 because bakers deal in dozens, while hot dogs vendors deal in pounds, with eight franks to a pound. In what has been dubbed the "piece treaty," Vienna Beef and S. Rosen have agreed to market eight-count packages of their respective products, and are cross-merchandising them in stores.

The meat-packing side of this is easiest to understand. Your standard-issue hot dog, a product that generations of consumers have found to be convenient, comes ten to the pound. Jumbo hot dogs come eight to the pound, and occasionally you'll see some symptom of wretched excess that comes four to the pound. If you've got 10,000 pounds of hot dogs, therefore, you know you've got 10,000 packages. A few packers deviate from this rule and give you, say, eight standard dogs per 12-ounce package, but they're in the minority.

I'm thinking hot dog buns now come in packs of ten.

It's to sell more bread. Or more hotdogs.

FYI, you can buy some hotdogs (the fat ones) in packages of 8.

I used to ask the same question. It is an imponderable marketing ploy.

Would you believe that I've seen this same question asked about half a dozen times? Not very original; it was first asked on TV some 30 years ago by George Carlin. Not very original. Try again.

They prolly do that to get you to buy more buns. You know they have to make their money.

Because they are packed by weight, not quantity. It is annoying, though.
